' - X v:- : 'VmS TX'/W* To t/ie Editor: The petition and -letter sent to Council by Mrs. Hatfield of the BMHA regarding ice time at the local local arenas contained numerous erroneous erroneous facts and we would like to set the record straight. 1. Oshawa does not have regular ice at the Orono Arena every Saturday Saturday morning and afternoon. One Oshawa team has one hour of ice on Saturday morning. This same team has had the same hour since the arena was built. 2. Not once has the Orono arena ice been double booked and the BMHA has never lost one minute of their ice time. 3. Who uses ice at the'Orono arena arena is a matter of public record and certainly not a secret. 4. The "Town" of Clarington Taxpayers Taxpayers do not pay one cent to maintain maintain the ice and operate the Orono Arena. 5. The Orono Arena was not built with your tax dollars. The then Town of Newcastle supplied the interim financing financing only. The arena was built through donations by local residents and businesses as well as Wintario grants. 6. Tax dollars are not used for the upkeep of the Orono Arena. As of 1990, the Municipality has been responsible responsible for the structural integrity of all Municipal owned buildings. This includes the foundation, roofing, fire and building codes retrofits etc. this, incidentally, was not requested by us but was forced on us by the province. The Orono Arena is one of a very few in Ontario which does not operate in the red and does not require require infusions of Taxpayers' money. The arena operates on money received received from the rental of the ice and the Community Centre. Maintenance of the arena would not be possible without the Orono HAVE YOUR TIRES REPLACED Before it's too late... This dedicated group of volunteers raises money from catering banquets as well as hosting the annual Beef Barbecue at the Orono Park every summer and serving meals at the Orono Fair. It should be noted that many of the volunteers have been on this committee committee since the arena was built in 1978 and since they no longer have children of their own playing hockey, their only motivation is community pride. Here is a partial list of what this committee has done at the Orono Arena over the years. (1) Paid for the paving and lighting lighting of the parking lot. (2) completely outfitted the kitchen kitchen in the Community Centre. (3) Installed the handicap elevator. elevator. (4) Installed the handicap ramp. (5) Paid for all the paint used to paint the Arena walls. Dressing rooms, lobby, Community Centre, etc. , (6) Installed new safety glass in south east comer of arena. (7) Supplied new industrial stove and upright cooler for kitchen. (8) Paid $2000 towards new sound system, (incidentally, the Orono Orono Figure Skating Club also donated $2000 towards this). (9) Bought upright cooler for Bar Area of Hall. (10) Bought new rubber flooring for all four dressing rooms. (11) Paid for paved area outside Zamboni room. (12) Bought new burnisher to polish the floors. (13) Purchased new Industrial water water heater. (14) Paid for new Impeller on Brine Pump. (15) Bought new toilet seats for all washrooms. (16) Paid for new kickboard and top sill for ice surface. (17) Purchased new ice edger. Not only do these volunteers work so no taxpayers money is needed to operate and maintain the Orono Arena, Arena, but some of the taxes they themselves themselves pay to Clarington arc used to operate and maintain the Darlington Arena and the Bowmanville Complex. Complex. During the 1993-94 hockey season, season, the BMHA had 32 1/2 hours of ice time at Darlington, Bowmanville and Orono Arenas. With only 12 teams, this works out to 2 hours and 42 minutes of home ice per team per week. By comparison, the Orono OMIIA teams received only 2 hours at the Orono Arena. The House League teams arc even worse off since they had just 1 and 1/2 hours per week. For the upcoming season, the BMHA is requesting 43 and 1/2 hours of ice time for just 14 teams. This works out to more than three hours of home ice per week for each team, BMHA teams do not require twice as much ice time per team as the house league teams. It should also be noted that the BMHA has the use of the Bowmanville Bowmanville and Darlington arenas for one whole weekend each year to host a Midget Tournament. It also has the use of both arenas for one entire week for its Christmas Classic, as well as one entire Saturday for Young Canada Day, Tiie I3MI1A received 3 and 1/2 hours of ice time at the Orono Arena last season. On 8 occasions only two teams showed up to use this time slot which resulted m one team having a 2 hour practice. We consider this a waste of valuable ice time. Better time management could perhaps have prevented a "Vd kilometer trip" to practice at another arena.
