Ducks Unlimited Surpass National Goal for 1993-94 Ducks Unlimited Canada (DU) has surpassed its national goal for 1993-94 by a healthy margin, securing securing over 173,000 acres and enhancing enhancing an additional 157,923 acres. Like most people, she loves getting presents. One of the most precious gifts she regularly receives comes from people she has never met. The gift is life itself, in the form of transfusions transfusions of red blood cells. Stefanie has been receiving this special gift once a month since being diagnosed with thalassemia at five months old. This hereditary blood disorder pevents the body from making making enough normal red cells to carry vital oxygen to tissues. A severe form of anemia, thalassemia thalassemia inhibits normal body development development and can produce fatigue, loss of appetite and chronic infection. But the blood transfusions Stefanie gets every four weeks at the Hospital for Sick Children, enable her to live an active life. "She's always on the go, involved in so many things," says her mother Angela. This energetic teenager teenager enjoys tennis, swimming, roller- blading, bike-riding, singing and playing the flute. "Next summer, I'm planning to visit Italy as part of a choir competition," competition," Stefanie adds. She continues, "I really feel grateful to everyone who gives blood. The Polsinellis have arranged their lives around Stefanie's needs but they try to keep things as close to normal as possible. Stefanie often goes with her mother to talk to community and student groups. "I want to help whenever I can because so many blood donors help me," Stefanie Stefanie asserts.
