The Clarington Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, July 16, 1994 Helpful Moving Tips Can Help Avoid Many Problems by Paddy Bateman There's no question that, for some, a household move is a traumatic traumatic experience, fraught with every emotion from anger, fear and worry to frustration, aggravation and doubt. That need not be the case, however, say the moving experts at Allied Van Lines, and to prove their point, they've compiled a terrific little book called "Guide to a Good Move" that's just filled with simple, practical practical tips, hints and suggestions that can work wonders in soothing tattered tattered nerves and emotions, if they're put into practice. It's available from any local Allied agent. Handily, the Allied people say that the recommendation sput forth in their book aren't just for people who move with their organization. They'll work in any move situation, with any mover. Here's just a few for you to think about: You may not realize it, but if you're moving from one province to another (it's called an "interprovincial" "interprovincial" move), it's likely that more than one agent will be involved in managing managing the process. First, there's the agent you called to arrange the move; he's called "the booking agent". And then, there may be an "origin agent" who packs the move and a "hauling agent" who actually moves your goods to your new home city. And, sometimes there's an agent who is responsible responsible for bringing your goods right to your front door, unpacking and removing the empty cartons, etc. This one's called "the destination agent." While all these agents are usually part of the same national van line (you should always check on this for safety's sake), a lot of paperwork is involved. Consequently, if you want to check on your move, or have a question related to its transport, always always make sure you've written down the Shipment Registration Number for handy reference. It's the one com ,1H NATIONAL mon identification that will follow your belongings from your old front door, right to your new one. The number is found on your Bill of Lading, Lading, a copy of which is always left with the customer. If you're not moving everything you own to your new home, you might wish to store some of your belongings belongings for a while. Allied's people suggest using the storage facilities of the company that's moving you, which leaves you with only one organization organization to deal with about any aspect aspect of your relocation. But, they say, don't store anything with anyone without first giving the facilities a thorough personal check. Look for cleanliness, organization, security and all the other details that will make sure your property remains in pristine condition. It may sound over-simplistic, but if you're packing things yourself, put heavy items in smaller boxes, and lighter items in larger ones. No one wants to (or likely is able to) lift a washing machine box full of books! And if you can, make as many of the boxes the same size, or in groups of sizes. They're easier and quicker to handle and move, and can cut down on your moving time and expense during both loading and unloading. Most professional movers can provide provide you with the kind of specialty cartons you need to self-pack for the greatest safety protection. Of course, always label everything clearly!
