18 The Clarington Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, July 23,1994 Task Force Announces Radioactive Waste Sites The Co-operative Siting Process, aimed at finding a volunteered site for a new management facility for historic low-level radioactive waste (LLRW), reached a critical milestone Wednesday, July 20, with the announcement announcement of Preferred Sites in Deep River. In implementing the siting process, process, the Siting Task Force (STF) has been working with the Deep River Community Liaison Group and the public through a series of stages in the site selection process. A Technical Technical Working Group was set up to develop develop criteria for selecting the potential potential sites for a facility. This working group included representatives of the STF, the liaison group and government government agencies, including the Ontario Ministry of Environment and Energy, the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources Resources and the Atomic Energy Control Control Board, the regulatory agency for radioactive materials in Canada. Deep River Locations Suitable for Two Kinds of Permanent Disposal Earlier rounds of selection criteria had narrowed the field of study to the lands where AECL's. Chalk River Laboratory Laboratory (CRL) is located. Within that 10,000 acre property, the sites known as E-l and M-l (see attached maps) have been identified by the Technical Working Group as preferred preferred sites for further study. The E-l site is located near the CRL main complex, just west of the Plant Road. Early studies and preliminary preliminary information show this site to be well suited for the two types of facilities facilities under consideration for permanent permanent disposal of the wastes - underground underground mined cavern and open pit with pervious surround. These two technologies rely on bedrock for containment containment and isolation of the wastes, and both require the same general site qualities and attributes. The E-l site will be further tested to determine determine if it is appropriate for one or both technologies. The M-l site is located in the southeast comer of the CRL property, property, about three quarters of a kilometer west of the Plant Road into CRL. This site will be studied to determine its suitability for a surface engineered mound. Final Decision Depends on Studies and Referendum M-l and E-l will be thoroughly investigated during the next six months. Field studies will be carried out to confirm that the preliminary information collected holds tme, and that the site meets the criteria for protecting protecting human health, the environment environment and valued local features that were identified by the CLG and the community. This detailed, site- specific data will help the Siting Task Force to identify a recommended Site and Technology. It will also be used in a preliminary assessment of the long-term performance of any LLRW facility that might be built on the site if the community volunteers the land. Site N-l (straddling the Mattawa Road about one kilometer from the western edge of the property) was identified as an alternate to E-l, since it also has appropriate attributes for the two technologies built in bedrock. However, N-l will only be considered considered if investigation of E-l shows that site is unsuitable. In March 1995, residents of Deep River, Chalk River and Wards 3 and 4 of the United Townships of Rolph, Buchanan, Wylie and McKay will be asked to decide in a referendum whether or not they support volunteering volunteering for the new facility. By the time of the referendum, the community community will know what effects might be created by the facility, how these arc to be dealt with, and what benefits and equity compensation would be available to the community should it agree to host the facility. The final decision on siting will be made by the Government of Canada. cornerstone realty ltd., realtor 104 king st. e., bowmanville ** Associate Brokers * Sales Representatives Miracle Network* SFONSOHEDIY REMIT 428-1206 (Toronto Line) RE/MAX experience gets results!
