Hazel knows the feeling. On Saturday we had a lovely drive to Bobcaygeon. Enjoyed strolling along the sidewalks. Listened to the street music supplied by entertainers. Had lunch. At noon went to the arena, bought admission tickets to Fiddlers and Step Dancing entertainment. Proceeded Proceeded to high seats at the side of the arena. People already seated there said something about chairs not being there when I fell in there - flat on my back in what seemed like a gutter. First aid applied ice to the left knee the size of a baseball and bandaged the swollen right arm. Sent us to Lindsay hospital emergency. What a busy place at 1 p.m.! Ice packs applied applied to swollen limbs, x-rayed by 3 p.m. No broken bones. Kind doctor on call dismissed us. What a way to celebrate our 45th wedding anniversary! anniversary! Sympathy is extended to relatives and friends of Nellie Spencer (nee Thomas) whose funeral took place on Friday, July 22rid. Graveside service and interment at St. George's Cemetery. Cemetery. On meeting Mr. and Mrs. Jack Ryan (Nellie's nephew) we learned that Reverend Lome Thomas died about a year ago and his wife Helen passed away about a week ago. Brother Fred Thomas spends summer in the west with daughter Gail and family and winters in Florida. Sister Rena lives in Sudbury. Jack Gordon and his wife Gloria have returned from a wonderful vacation vacation in the Ukraine, where Jack found his roots: Staying in a cousin's apartment apartment in Kiev, each day the family took them on trips to Jack's father's property, school and cemetery in Uman. A pioneer village depicting houses and culture in the 1700's was especially interesting. A boat ride on the Dnipro River, visits to monastery and catacombs, churches in many cities were among the highlights. Most touching was the family reunion with about one hundred hundred persons in attendance. On Saturday Saturday morning Jack and Gloria returned returned home very weary but very happy, finding all these cousins. We welcome home Mrs. Gladys Wood from Memorial Hospital, Bowmanville. Last Wednesday Sandra Schmahl called to inform us that she and Tom had celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary on July 14. But, she was very concerned that someone had taken a floral arrangement from Grandma Lena Garrod's grave at Bond Head Cemetery, and, that morning, someone had removed two wicker baskets of plants and flowers which adorned their front doorsteps. Birthday greetings to Bemiece Milligan, Kathleen Kimball, and John Alldread. Congratulations and best wishes to Betty and Pat Blaker on their July wedding anniversary. Master Russell Hunt was a weekend weekend visitor with grandparents Stanley and Kathleen Powell. Grayden and Adrien were holidaying with their May grandparents. Mrs. Kathleen Kimball reports that Mr. Hugh Stapleton is a patient in Port Hope and District Hospital. Mr. and Mrs. Ronald Powell and Gary, Shannon and Shaun Couch visited visited on Friday with the Sundstrom family, Oshawa, helping Cassandra celebrate her third birthday. On Saturday, July 23rd, Calvin Allin and Wendy Duncan were united united in marriage at Newcastle United Church. We extend congratulations to the happy family. St. George's Anglican Church • On Friday, July 22 Nellie Spencer of Flesherton, widow of Allan Spencer Spencer was interred in St. George's Cemetery. Cemetery. The Reverend Robert Hartley conducted the graveside service. It was followed by a gathering of friends and relatives in the Parish Hall. On Sunday, Lay Reader Oakley Peters preached a sermon on Three Kinds of Faith. He was assisted in the Service of Morning Prayer by Cathie Moulton and Fred Yates. Gibson Family Picnic The Gibson family picnic was held this past Sunday (July 24th), for the 26th year in a row. Descendants of William Gibson, of England, who settled in Upper Canada in 1837, gathered at the home of Bertha and Gerald Gibson in Newcastle. About 50 people attended this year, from as far away as Welland, Colboume and Brampton. The picnic was organized by its President, David Gibson (Newcastle), who broke from traditional picnic fare and instigated a barbecue with a delicious buffet of salads and desserts. desserts. The Gibsons were blessed this year with a wonderfully sunny day, and enjoyed a scavenger hunt, swimming, swimming, volleyball, races for the children children and even a few hands of bridge. Prizes were awarded to Tom Gibson, of Welland for travelling the farthest distance, and to Grace Gibson of Bowmanville, for being the oldest (and wisest) member of the family at 88! The family all look forward to seeing everyone again next year. The Durham East 4-H Veterinarian Science Club was heading to Brighton on the evening of July 21 to tour the Veterinarian Services Lab run by the Ministry of Agriculture. Dr. Robert Green and his wife, Sue Green, of the Newcastle Veterinary Clinic, organized the trip.
