In 1898, among other businesses, there was a blacksmith shop managed by Gerry Henry, a hotel, an Orange Lodge, a general store and post office. office. Later industry included a service station and a broom factory. The owners of the general store down through the years were Mr. Cowan, Robert Phillip, Herbert McLaughlin, Thomas Brock, Hap Gill, Arthur Ribey and John Littley. Sometime after 1898 the post office office was moved to the hotel. The old Burketon hotel was a temperance temperance establishment, and whether or not this caused its demise is not known. In the late 1920's, Earl By am turned it into a general store, and later later on Bill McCullough ran a harness shop from the premises. The post office office was closed in 1969 when mail was delivered out of the Blackstock post office. A grain elevator operated at Burketon Station from 1911 to 1950. During the 1930's and 40's, the ice cream sold at the service station was in great demand, and folks would drive out from Bowmanvillc and other points south, just for an ice cream cone, and to fill up with gas while they were there. . I remember a time when we were just kids in the early '50's, we were out for a Sunday afternoon drive. Dad had been telling us about the great ice cream at Burketon, and we headed there. What a disappointment to find the place all closed up. I never did get to taste this renowned treat! Next door to the service station was Davies dance hall, and from what I hear it was a popular spot for one and all. Mr. and Mrs. Bert Waterhouse were the last tenants to operate a small lunch counter at the Burketon Station depot. The depot was demolished demolished in 1969. Before the church at Burketon Station was built, in the early 1900's, services were held in the railway terminal terminal building. The Burketon United Church started life as a Bible Christian Christian Chapel in Raglan in 1861 and was moved to Burketon in the early years of the 20th century. It is now a private residence. Behind the church was a large bam. After the days when it was used to house horses and buggies on Sundays, Sundays, it was used for suppers and socials. socials. The bam was demolished in 1957. The first school was of frame construction construction and was replaced at the turn of the century. The new school was also of wood construction, but was later bricked. It was located on the west side of. Scugog Street just north of the C.P.R. tracks. It was tom down in 1962. Bethesda The community of Bethesda began began in the 1840's with a church, a cemetery cemetery and school, all named Bethesda. Bethesda. The church was replaced by a brick structure in 1856 and was a Bible Christian Chapel, one of the earliest brick chapels in the township. The church hosted services until 1932 and was sold to the Scugog Island Island United Church trustees in 1937 and was moved to the Port Perry area. The chapel at the cemetery today today was erected in 1963 in memory of the pioneer families buried there. The school was replaced by a brick one in 1876 but burned down in 1958. It was replaced by a modem school that was used for only 12 years. It is now a private residence. Tuesday morning before help could arrive at the scene to fight the blaze. The brick school is located 1 1/2 miles south of Tyrone. An attempt is being made to find suitable classroom space for the 19 pupils who attended Bethesda school. It is expected that the school will be rebuilt." "First to notice the fire were Gor- dyn Brent and Clinton Bigelow who both live near the school grounds. Before sufficient help could arrive, the building lay in smouldering ruins. The school was heated by an oil furnace and it is speculated that a faulty oil drum may have started the blaze. A meeting was held Tuesday afternoon to make plans for future ' school accommodations. Miss Vilda Brown, Millbrook, has been the teacher at the school for the past two years."
