Shameful Display of Coaching Dear Editor Since kids learn by example, I hope none at a recent soccer game follow the example of one "little league* * parent I witnessed last night. My son looks forward to each game, since this is his first year playing, but the kids on both teams couldn't play the second half because because of one assistant coach. Because of one call the ref made, the coach and assistant coach started screaming at him and then picked up and left I heard one of his little players say, "instead of getting rid of the ref, we should get rid of you." Since they were losing, they got angry and left. What a great exam ple for the kids on both teams! One little girl on the other team sat in her mom's car crying her heart out because because her coach called the game. I watched my husband play soccer soccer for many years - coached by Jim Potter Sr. at Salem. Although tempers sometimes got hot, I didn't once witness the shameful behavior I did last night The man needs to be counselled and never let coach again for his childish actions. Hopefully, someone in authority will do something about this so everyone everyone knows in future how to conduct conduct themselves with our youth today, today, so they won't be our hot-heads of tomorrow. Sincerely Virginia Foley by Brad Kelly Teresa Ceranowicz has come a very long way in a relatively short period of time in the sport of tae- kwon-do. In October, the Courtice resident will be going even farther than she could have possibly imagined. Based on her performance at the recently-completed National Championships Championships in Ottawa, Ceranowicz has been selected to represent Canada Canada at the World Championships in Sofia, Bulgaria. Ceranowicz, along with 25 others, others, will compete against the world's best from October 13-16. Though she admits to being both "nervous and excited" about the upcoming trip, she needn't be. Her strong showing at the Canadian Championships puts her in a favourable favourable position for a top placing in Bulgaria. She earned a gold medal in sparring, sparring, and followed with a silver in patterns in the junior girls' division. "It was harder than I thought it would be," said the shy 14-year-old of the competition she faced in Ottawa. Ottawa. The hardest part may yet come. Not for her, but for her parents. "It's a bit nerve-wracking," said Teresa's mother, Cindy. "We had trouble letting her go off to Ottawa, but we're over that now. I can't picture myself standing at the airport and saying goodbye when she goes to Bulgaria." Ceranowicz was introduced to the sport of tae-kwon-do four years ago by a friend, and has been under the close tutelage of Troy F. White at the Elite Club in Whitby. White, a 4th degree black belt, also qualified for the World Championships Championships in the men's division. A third member of the club, 15- year-old Adam Johnstone, will also be representing Canada. He will be competing in the junior boys' division. division. Since her selection to the Canadian Canadian team, Ceranowicz has been train ing five times a week, sometimes dedicating three hours a day to this task. Every other weekend, she leaves for Ottawa to participate in some high level training. In four short years, she has attended attended eight competitions, placing in all but one of them. In January, she earned her 1st degree black belt She is now facing one of the drawbacks of being an elite athlete at a chosen sport Though it takes a tremendous amount of talent and commitment to be selected to represent represent the country at an international level, it also takes a great deal of funding. It's an aspect of sports that all the hours of training and dedication can't compensate for. To help alleviate some of the costs, the Whitby tae-kwon-do club will be holding a giant garage sale on August 27 and 28 at the Kinsmen Hall, 109 Colbome Street, Oshawa. Pending approval, the club is also hoping to do some demonstrations at the Oshawa Centre and Whitby Mall, and possibly open an information information booth. Ceranowicz is hoping to raise $1,200 through fundraising efforts. An account has been set up at the Royal Bank, 1405 King Street East, Courtice, where donations will be accepted. The account number is 5012802. Beyond the competition this October, October, the grade ten student at Courtice Courtice Secondary School is hoping to return to the World Championships again next year. Italy will host the competition in May of 1995. Darlington Youth Soccer Team W L T Pts. DYSL Major Squirt Courtice Under 6 Orono #1 9 0 1 19 Courtice Art.
