N I New Playground Equipment Opened at Bowmanville Lions Centre The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, August 17,1994 13 E Clarington Mayor Diane Hamre and Courtney Stevens joined forces to slide down the new playground playground equipment at the Bowmanville Lion Centre on Sunday afternoon, Aug. 14. Joining them in celebration celebration of the new equipment are many of the children who were enjoying themselves on the variety of Paris playground equipment and Lions Ron White, Kirk Kemp, Charles Stevens, Brad Anderson and Ward Two Regional Councillor Carson Elliot. The Bowmanville Lions Club renewed the life expectancy expectancy of the old equipment with a brand new coat of paint. The refurbishing and a new play set cost the Lions Lions Club of Bowmanville $11,000. Kemp said it was money well spent on a playground that serves a wide area in one of the older residential areas of Bowmanville. Happenings and Events from Hampton Area Laying Vinyl Tile a Good First Project When considering which home improvement project to tackle, it's wise to consider a few pertinent questions. Will it enhance the resale value of your home? Some very expensive add-ons, like an inground swimming pool, may not add to the resale value; it could even act as a hindrance to a sale. After all, what on earth can you do with an unwanted pool? It is hard to ignore. But things like swimming pools, expensive wallpaper, elegant bookshelves, may have no resale value but the amount of pleasure you enjoy while using them is often justification enough. Is the improvement the sort of necessity that | requires top priority to avoid future damage or ■ complications to the house or the occupants? 1 Antiquated wiring or a leaky roof can, of course, | be ignored, but often at tremendous cost. Does ■ the job require a lot of labor and is the labor highly | skilled? There are some jobs that you don't want I to tackle without the needed skill and tools. If you ■ do, then accept the reality it will take you hours ■ longer than a tradesman would spend. The money you save set against the time you worked may result in your labor being worth less than a dollar an hour. I am sure I can paint or wallpaper and pay myself the same as I would a professional with the money saved. But I would never presume to tackle roofing or chimney cleaning ... again (*#<§>!!). • Assess your own capabilities before taking on maintenance and improvement chores. For example, the only reason I can think of for anyone not wanting to lay vinyl tile is because of a bad back or wonky knees. It is labor intensive, requiring time and care and very few tools. The satisfaction you will get from having transformed a room's decor is worth all the time and care you give it. Tiles come in 12" squares and there are plenty of sources, styles and patterns to choose from. Choose top quality if you feel confident you will still own the house in 15 years, and that you won't tire of the pattern. If you are game to try, here's the drill. Well folks, that's all the news you can use this week. by Ben Bramble using a broad putty knife to protect the wood from damage as you pry it up. Use a magic marker to indicate its location and pull all nails out from the back so the front is not splintered. Remove old floor covering if necessary. Often you can tile right over it if it is secure and not broken or cracked. Now is the time to screw down any squeaky spots in the floor with drywall screws into the floor joists. If the floor is not good enough to receive tile, screw down 4 x 4 sheets of poplar underlay, being careful to butt the edges tightly together and to sink each screw so the head doesn't protrude. Use a chalk line from the corners of a rectangular room to find the centre. If necessary, mark out a rectangle in an irregular shaped room. Divide the room into four quadrants by snapping the chalk line at right angles to the wall and through the centre. To check the quadrants for square, measure from the centre point along one line and mark off three feet; along the adjacent line mark four feet. The diagonal joining the two points should be five feet. If not, adjust one line to make it so. At this point it is wise to dry-fit the tiles starting at the centre to see how they meet the walls. If a tile has to be cut to less than three inches you should adjust the centre so there is as much of each tile at the walls as possible. Lastly, sweep and preferably vacuum the floor after the tiles are gathered up. Tiny bits of debris will push up little bumps in the tiles and even wear through to spoil a beautiful job. When laying the tiles, start in the centre and do a quadrant at a time. Peel and stick tiles are easiest to apply; just make sure each one is butted tightly and in line with its neighbors. Small discrepancies at the start will multiply. Follow directions on the can if you use a mastic adhesive, especially as to the size of teeth in the spreading trowel. Use firm pressure all over each tile to set it in place; a piece of 2 x 4 is a help. Hit it with a hammer as it lies across the edges of the tiles. Cutting pieces to fit against walls and cabinets is easily done with a utility knife against a straight edge while the tile sits on a piece of scrap plywood.
