However, statistics statistics show "that family farms have a low survival rate. Less than 30% are transferred to the second generation; 60% are liquidated or sold when the present owner's involvement ends; and only 10% last through to the third generation. To help farm owners ensure the continuity of their businesses, the Federal Business Development Bank has developed a Family Farm Transfer Transfer Program. The program, which was recently' presented in Elgin by the FBDB in ; conjunction with the Ontario Agricultural Agricultural Training Institute, the Elgin Training Council, the Elgin Training Committee and the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Foods, consists of a series of four practical training workshops. Through the workshops, farm operators leam how to get the most from professional advisors, how to determine the farm's future viability, viability, how and when to retire, how to negotiate with their family and how to choose a successor or buyer. Don and Beth Vicary, who are the fourth-generation operators of the family farm, wanted to pass on the business to the fifth generation. "My husband will turn 65 soon, so we decided decided that it was a good time to start planning for the future," explains Beth Vicary. "The program, especially especially the workshops on taxation and legal legal issues, was a big help in getting us started." The Vicarys recently held their first family meeting with their children children to discuss succession planning and found it very fruitful. The parents and the children completed worksheets worksheets distributed as part of the program program workshops, and the Vicarys discussed discussed them with other participants and program advisors. Mrs. Vicary says these open discussions are a plus because participants leam from one another and help each other. The program also provides 12 hours of on-site counselling provided by counsellors specializing in family business succession planning. The counsellors work with the farm families families to help document and finalize their succession plan. "Our counsellor counsellor is excellent," adds Beth Vicary, "and he's already had meetings with us and the children. He's helping us put everyone's ideas together."
