"It was time to give our system an overhaul," said John Core, Chairman of the Ontario Milk Marketing Board (OMMB). "The new system will be much easier to administer and understand." understand." The change will also allow Ontario to easily adapt to any changes changes in national marketing programs. The former system had two types of quota, one for milk for fluid consumption consumption and another for milk made into butter, cheese, ice cream and other dairy products. It arose from Ontario's milk marketing history but no longer reflects today's markets. All milk has had to meet the same high quality standards since 1981 and milk components routinely flow between between these two, formerly separate, markets. "The farmer- owned, operated and financed system which manages Ontario's milk production production has gone through a continuous continuous process of adapting to market changes since the OMMB was formed in 1965 and this is the next logical step." Consumer fluid milk prices in southern Ontario will not be affected by the August 1 change. Consumers in Northern Ontario should see some lowering of retail milk prices as the dairies in the area will pay between 1.4 and 3.2 cents per litre less for the milk they process. process. With the changes, processors will pay the same for milk throughout throughout Ontario. For farmers, the August 1 change was put in place in a way, that meant all fanns had the same income potential potential under the new system as they did under the old system. All of Ontario's Ontario's 8,300 dairy farmers are members members of the OMMB and their views were sought and used to shape the development development of the new quota system. © Valerie Aston** 234 King Street East, Bowmanviîle Telephone 623-3393 Toronto Line 686-1035 Management and Staff of W.
