On Wednesday, August 10, a bus full of Newcastle seniors travelled to the Skydome where they enjoyed the Cleveland Indians and Blue Jays playing one of their last games before the strike. On the way home the seniors seniors partook of dinner at Ken Wong's, Ajax. All report a good day. On Thursday evening, August 18, Mr. Albert Pearce hosted a barbecue for the seniors. On his lovely grounds, one hundred and six persons devoured com, hamburgs, hot dogs, peach, apple, cherry or blueberry pies and ice cream. Tea and coffee were also provided. Mrs. Jean Rickard and Stanley Powell were chefs at the barbecues, barbecues, Brenton Rickard assisted with serving the com which had been cooked by Ross Allin, Vance Cooper and Ron Burley. There must have been beverage makers, too. After dinner dinner Ross Allin, Master of Ceremonies, Ceremonies, led in sing-songs, accompanied by Marie Pedwell. Marie and her brother Bill Allin with his euphonium played several numbers, appreciated by all. June Wilson and Ross Allin provided harmonica tunes. Bill, Marie Marie and John Scott with violin, produced produced more music. Mr. Edgar Mill- son played some lively tunes on his fiddle. John Scott, accompanied by wife Wilma, added other numbers to the programme, and, Bill Allin also rattled the spoons. All in all, the weather co-operated on this lovely evening. On Saturday, August 20, 1994, Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Murray and Colleen, Colleen, Frankford, Mr. Arthur Bedwin and Fred, Lake Shore, and Mrs. Jean Jilisen, Newtonville attended the wedding of Candice Willis and Darren Darren Rogerson at St. Mary's Church, Lindsay and reception following at the Admiral Inn. On Friday evening Mr. Harry Wade enjoyed dinner with Harvey and Vema Attwood, Whitby. Mr. Allan Holdaway, Port Britain, visited recently with his cousin, Mr. Harry Wade. Mr. and Mrs. Vance Cooper, Oshawa, were recent visitors with Mrs. Kathleen Kimball. On Sunday, August 21, the Crago family picnic was held at Orono Park. Rain in the morning kept plans on hold so that only one meal was enjoyed enjoyed in the afternoon after the games were conducted by Stanley and John Lane. The youngest person present was Stephanie Crago, 7 1/2 month old daughter of Karen and Lance Crago. Jack Crago resigned as president and Stanley Lane will fill that position in 1995. It was decided that the picnic will again be held on the third Sunday in August at Orono Park. In charge of Sports next year are Brian and Richard Sargent. Congratulations to Mrs. Marilyn Martin who was awarded Grand Champion on her quilt at Peterborough Peterborough Fair. Since this quilt has been done for the Kidney Foundation, it cannot be sent on, but it is still a first- prize quilt. Boni at the family farm north of Newcastle she was christened at St. George's but lived most of her life in the United States. However, she and her three sisters maintained an abiding interest in St. George's and on the death of their mother, Helen Rayner established established in her memory a fund to be used for educational purposes. Widowed at an early age, Mrs. Noice studied theology and was ordained ordained a deacon in the Episcopalian Church (U.S.). Newcastle Horticulture Report On Tuesday, August 16, 1994, the Newcastle Horticultural Society held its annual flower and vegetable show. Two hundred and twenty-nine adult entries were exhibited by fifteen fifteen members. President Wylma Allin thanked all who worked at the annual show. Mrs. Hazel Crago, who was 1993 winner of the Elmhurst Silver Cup, presented it to Vicki Lesnick who earned 75 1/2 points, the most in the show. Wylma | Allin came second with 70 points, followed by Loma Atkins with 62 1/ 2, and Jean Rickard was fourth with 52 points.
