Canadian Horse Racing Jinx Continues at Hambletonian As Last Victory Came in 1975 The $1 million Hambletonian, a stakes race for three-year-old trotters, trotters, has been called the harness racing racing equivalent to the Stanley Cup, the World Series, and the Super Bowl. It's the one race every person involved involved in harness racing dreams of winning,-and most will tell you, it's the most elusive prize. The 1994 edition, played out on August 6 before a great crowd at New Jersey's famed mile track, The Meadowlands, featured one of the finest group of trotters ever assembled assembled for the mid-summer classic. There was much pre-race hype surrounding the Canadian-owned horses entered. You see, although Canadian horses and horsemen have dominated the sport across North America, for some reason the Hambletonian Hambletonian seemed to elude them. Only two Canadian-owned horses, horses, the outstanding filly Helicopter and the great colt Bonefish have managed to capture the Hambo trophy. trophy. Those victories came in 1953 and 1975 respectively. The Canadian hopes this year rested on the shoulders of two outstanding outstanding Canadian-owned sophomores, sophomores, both with the credentials necessary to break the 19-year drought. The first was the colt referred to now as the "Cinderfella story of harness racing" called Bye Tsem. Purchased for a mere $4,200 as a yearling by first time horse owners Larry and Marilyn Fromowitz of Richmond Hill, Bye Tsem entered the Hambo with an impressive record. He had won 11 of his 14 races races in 1994, including the Canadian Trotting Classic at Woodbine in a record time of 1:55 flat, and his season's season's earnings going into the Hambo Hambo were $157,000. The other Canadian hopeful in the Hambo was Wesgate Crown, a homebred colt owned by Paul and John Simmonds of Pickering, and Rose Guida of Florida. Last year, as a two-year-old, Wesgate Crown was virtually unbeatable. unbeatable. He captured seven of eight starts, including most of the major two-year-old stakes, and ended the season with over $766,000 in the bank. Eighteen trotters were entered for the 1994 Hambletonian, necessitating necessitating two elimination heats, with the top five finishers in each returning for the $1 million final later that afternoon. afternoon. Unfortunately, it wasn't Wesgate Crown's day to shine. With the sport's leading driver, Canadian John Campbell in the sulky, the colt appeared to be moving into striking position of the leaders through the stretch, but a costly break in stride took him out of contention. That heat was won by Victory Dream in 1:53.4. The only Canadian left then was Bye Tsem in the second elimination. Traincr/drivcr Joe Hudon Jr. of Rockwood, put his colt on top early and they led the field throughout most of the race, except where it counted, at the finish line. Bye Tsem appeared to tire in the stretch, but hung on to finish fifth to cam die final qualifying berth into the final. final. Bullville Victory took this elimination elimination heal in 1:54.4. In the final, Bye Tsem was saddled saddled with the extreme outside starting starting position, post ten, and Hudon wisely let the inside horses battle for the front-end while lie bided his time further back in the pack. Despite Despite being parked out, at one point three wide for most of the race, Bye Tsem put in a huge effort to finish third. The Hambo final was taken by the outstanding colt Victory Dream in 1:54,1 with Quebec native Michel LnChnncc in the sulky. It marked the first time LaChance, one of the premier drivers in the sport, had captured the illustrious event, As for Bye Tsem, Ills connections connections couldn't have been more pleased with his performance. After his heat, Hudon told the Fromo- witz's they could be proud to know their horse was among the top ten trotters in North America. After the final, he ranked in the top three and earned a cool $125,000 (US) for his efforts to boost his 1994 earnings over $280,000. Not a bad return on an original investment of $4,200.
