Section Two The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, September 7,1994 19 Yelverton By Harvey Malcolm This past week-end was definitely definitely a multiple-choice one, with a number of events conflicting with each other and vying for interest and attendance. Blackstock Fair was the main attraction attraction for many local residents - the Demolition Derby on Friday night, always a crowd pleaser, drew a large attendance. As per usual, Yelverton's Brian Goble was one of the successful participants. On Saturday, Saturday, the Fair drew a strong contingent contingent of residents - an opportunity to renew old acquaintances from former former years and enjoy the hustle and bustle of the event. On Friday evening, a very successful successful Jack and Jill party was held in Nestleton Community Centre for Joanne Stinson and Mark Roberts. A pleasant social evening was passed and a tidy sum realizzed for Joanne and Mark who plan to trip down the church aisle in mid- September. On Saturday evening, a special birthday was observed for Theresa McKinnon, with a house party held at Nellie and Robbie Thiele's in Lotus. Lotus. Theresa was the recipient of a collection of useful articles which she will be. using in their recently purchased farm home, previously owned by the late Mrs. Hazel Stinson Stinson in Lotus, and which is currently in a state of renovation. Around BOSS BOSS guests enjoyed the Thiele hospitality hospitality and an opportunity to inspect their spacious and very attractive new home. A pleasant social evening evening was spent following a sumptuous sumptuous pot luck dinner. Dale and Nancy Stinson took off on the week-end for Hamilton where they were participating in a ball tournament. After a rather quiet summer, our Yelverton Church will come back to life in the month ahead. Our 132nd church anniversary is scheduled to be held on Sunday, Sept 18th at 11 a.m. with a former minister, Rev. Art Rodgers as guest preacher. Although our Janetville Charge is indebted to several guests who have filled in during Rev. Ross Benns' sick leave, we are looking forward to having him back in the pulpit in October. Bob and Mary Morelli of nearby Lotus have just returned from a very interesting 7,000 kilometer motor trip through southern U.S.A. which included Texas, Georgia, Florida and Louisiana, along the shores of the Mississippi. Welcome home. On Thursday past it was our pleasure (Corrie & mine) to entertain entertain our four grandchildren for the day - the whole day! We're pleased to relate it was not as traumatic as it could have been - we survived and they survived. Perhaps, part of our success could be attributed to our choice of entertainment - we took them to an outdoor bird and animal sanctuary that has recently been opened at Seagrave. The new enter- prize is owned and operated by Mr. and Mrs. Norman Phillips. We cannot cannot speak too highly of the location - an ideal place to take the children. From a very modeat beginning, it has grown with new additions. What probably was its greatest asset was its cleanliness and its setting on a well manicured grassy knoll. The animals appeared very healthy and content and devoid of that nauseating nauseating stench that characterizes many zoos, confined in too small an area. Several varieties of monkeys were confined in spacious cages. There was a great variety of cats, one big, friendly black bear, a collection of wolves - several Arctic - and one black timber wolf. A number of white tail deer co-habited with a llama llama and a donkey. A herd of buffalo with their calves, roamed the fenced spacious farm pasture land. Half a dozen kids (goat kids, that is) were in an enclosure where they couldn't pester the the guests for food and pollute the grassy walking areas. A couple of emus were in the total collection. collection. A friendly parakeet and an owl were the only members of the bird family that we can recall. The choice of the whole assortment assortment was, without a doubt, a pair of young tiger cubs who were being OUR COMPLIMENTS raised on a bottle. Their antics entertained entertained all the small fry present A number of their animals had appeared on television commercials over the part year or two. One of the latest additions wes a sleek cougar that had outgrown his residential home. The owners also own a farm in Manvers Township off County Road 31 en route from Highway # 35 to Omemee YOUNG PEOPLE make a measurable difference in our town.
