The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, September 14,1994 MONEY DOES GROW ON TREES As a home owner you face many decisions when it comes to maintaining and improving your property. Improvements can be very costly so they should be made with great care, keeping in mind that certain improvements to a home arc made strictly for the home owner's comfort and lifestyle and will not necessarily ' bring great returns when the home is sold again. A swimming pool is a prime example of this. There is however, one enhancement that docs not require a very large financial outlay and which will definitely "grow" in value as the years go by, and this is - TREES! Mature trees add real value to a property - as docs all landscaping, especially in new subdivisions. I recently heard a story about a couple who had many heated "debates" regarding the purchase of drapes for their new home as opposed to spending their limited funds on trees and shrubs. The husband finally won and the money was spent on landscaping. Some years later they sold their home and, you guessed it - the purchasers selected their home over a very similar one in the area because of the mature trees. So you see, money does grow on trees! Thinking of buying or selling, meet with me first. A PHONE OF YOUR OWN Monopoly must surely be one of the most popular board games ever invented and the most durable. Monopolies in the marketplace of the "real world" are neither popular nor durable. Who, for instance, has not cursed the post office in just about anÿ country visited? Or Ontario Hydro, or Bell Canada? But times, they are a changing and their durability is threatened on many fronts by the competition that has been let loose among them. However, the freedom of choice that Is a by-product of this competition has been something of a mixed blessing for the average consumer. When Ma Bell first allowed us to purchase our own equipment I was a bit overwhelmed. Ma Bell had taken her cue from Henry Ford early on and offered us any color of phone we wanted as long as it was black. Then came liberation day and we could not only buy from a rainbow of colors and styles but we didn't even have to buy it from Ma. We could go anywhere they sold phones. That kind of freedom can be daunting. It's the main reason I do not yet own a cellular phone. Trying to decide which is the best choice has muddled my brain. I did manage to choose one of the many suppliers of long distance service, other than Bell, but anyone who can tell me which one is 'the best" should give me a call. Every time I see another promotion I try to compare it to my choice and come up "no decision." In the matter of home equipment such as phones, fax machines and answering machines I feel better informed but not completely at ease. For example, before freedom of choice I "came into possession" of a Bell phone that was left in a house I was renting. I hooked it up and there was strong evidence I was operating contrary to company policy. I instajled my own telephone jacks, which I purchased legally from Radio Shack, after calling Bell by Ben Bramble information about the legality. I was informed it was not really illegal, but that if my installations caused any trouble with the functioning of the line or any damage, I would be responsible for the cost of any repairs. Those installations were not "approved", but so far they have cost me far less than those that would have been installed by Bell. To take it one step further I called Bell to get the official status of the phones, fax machine and answering machine in my home that were not purchased from a Bell Phone Centre. Those units are mine to use but also to service if anything goes wrong with them. Bell has no responsibility for them even if they had been purchased from a Bell store, other than the warranty that might be applicable. Equipment that Bell installs and rents to me, however, is the responsibility of Bell to service without charge. Bell Is also responsible for any damage that the unit might cause the system. But damage caused by the units that I own will be repaired by Bell service, people at the rate of $72.00 per hour. In addition, if I call for service because there seems to be trouble on my line, and a service person comes and finds the trouble is in fact with one of my units, then I have to pay for the service call but 1 get no repair. The advice I received from Bell regarding the purchase of equipment from an outside source was to make certain the unit had the CSA (Canadian Standards Association) stamp. I was also told equipment bought outside Canada could be incompatible with the Bell system and could cause damage for which I would be responsible. Sound advice. All my information came from a Bell rep, not from Ernestine (Lilly Tomlin), and he was most helpful and gracious.
