For more details, contact: Kim Huestis (623-1741) or Pat Street (623-4599) THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 15TH UNITED WAY CAMPAIGN KICK-OFF - The annual United Way Campaign for Oshawa, Whitby and Newcastle takes flight at the General Sikorski Hall in Oshawa. The program begins at 5 p.m., when area restaurants will serve their chicken wing specialties to United Way volunteers and supporters. There is also judging of the best chicken wings, a line dancing demonstration, music by Paul Wasson and the Burnt River Band, and many other activities. Look for more United Way fund-raising events throughout the fall. FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 16TH ARTFEST OPENS - More than 40 Durham Region artists will be represented at the Artfest taking place in Oshawa September 16 to October 1. Photography, paintings, drawings, printmaking and sculpture will be part of the show which is based at the Alger Press Building and at other downtown locations, including 14 Celina St. and 40 King St W. Clarington artists in the exhibition include: Maralynn Cherry, Tony Cooper, Paul Kovanen, Judith Mason-Kendrick, Cindy More, Sally Thurlow and Steven Frank. SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 17TH MALL HOLDS RE-OPENING -- Don't forget to check out the many improvements which have been made to the Bowmanville Mall. The official opening of the expanded and renovated mall takes place September 17th, with a ribbon-cutting at 10 a.m. and lots of other special events all day, including draws for merchandise and fun for the kids! The expanded mall, which includes the new Met Mart store, boasts 115,000 square feet of floor space and about a dozen new shops. •••••••■■•a* BIG BROTHERS PARKING LOT SALE ~ In connection with Big Brothers Month, there will be a parking lot sale on Saturday, September 17, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. It takes place at the Big Brothers office on Scugog St, in Bowmanville. Donations to the sale are welcome. Items can be dropped off at 23 Scugog St., Bowmanville, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Monday to Thursday. Donations can be dropped off at the museum Tuesday through Sunday between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. To date, Clarke Museum has recycled over 90,000 books through these annual sales. ARCHIBALD'S APPLEFEST BENEFITS YWCA - Archibald Orchards will be holding an Applefest and YWCA Fun Fair Saturday, Sept. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. They're located at 6275 Liberty St. N. SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 18TH LEGION WEEK BEGINS - Branch 178 of the Royal Canadian ■ Legion will present its annual Legion Week events, commencing Sunday, September 18th. To launch the week, there will be free hot dogs and pop served in the parking lot on King St., commencing at noon. A bake sale will also take place at that time. Then there will be an Open House in the Club Room, with a pool tournament. The fust game begins at 12:30. Legion Week activities run front September 18 to 24. Other events include a euchre tournament, cribbage, mixed dart tournament, meat roll, general meeting, and a performance by 'The Entertainers" Saturday night, September 24. For details, see the Legion Week ad in this edition. JURIED FINE ARTS SHOW -- The Visual Arts Centre of Bowmanville will hold its 14th annual juried show September 18 to October 7. TERRY FOX RUN - After a one-year absence, the run has been re-established, thanks to the efforts of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority who have volunteered to be sponsors. The fund-raiser for cancer research takes place on September 18th, with the start and finish line at Bowmanville's Memorial Park. The course is 10 kilometres. Of course, you don't have to run that distance. You can walk, cycle, roller-blade or use some other mode of transportation. The important thing is to raise funds for the Cancer Society. Terry Fox runs across Canada and in a number of other countries have raised $135 million. APPLE FESTIVAL AT TED WATSON FARMS - 'The Yesteryears" will be the theme of an apple festival taking place between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Sept. 18. Featured events include apple doll making, honey demonstrations, craft items for sale, and horse-drawn wagon rides. CHOO radio will be on the scene and there will be free balloons. Annual Kite Festival Held in Courtice • A gentle breeze lifted this little girl's kite high over the field at Courtice Secondary School during the Big Brothers 2nd annual kite • festival held last Saturday. The weather co-operated for the weekend event, providing a perfect blend of sun, cloud and breezes. The Toronto Toronto IGte Club provided demonstrations. Awards were presented to kids who made their own kites. ONTARIO FINALS RODEO - Ontario's top cowboys and cowgirls will be riding into Orono in September for the Ontario Rodeo Association 1994 Finals. The rodeo will be at the Orono fairgrounds September 23, 24 and 25. It includes steer wrestling, saddle bronc riding, barrel racing, calf roping, team roping, and bull riding.
