A list of entrants was as follows: Bowmanville, two teams; Agin- court, one team; Cobourg, two teams; Lindsay, two teams; Oshawa, five teams (unfortunately one team was unable to be present); Peterborough, Peterborough, one team; Port Hope, one team. This adds up to 14 teams, so just seven greens were filled instead of the usual eight. And, instead of two three-game winners, there was only one. Final results of three games were: one game winner -- Pauline INSTANT REPLAY SPORTS New & Used 103 King St. E., Bowmanville 623-2052 NOW OPEN Full line of Hockey and Skating products. Weather was perfect, players reported reported good, friendly games, greens were fast and the male members of our club came through with shining colours. They were on kitchen duty for the third consecutive year. Our local competitive swim team, NEWAC, is ready to get back in the swim. After a short summer break from training, this hardworking hardworking group of aquatic athletes returns to routine this week. The Aquatic Club is a well organized organized team of volunteers and staff which offers training programs from one day a week, novice (ages 7 and up), all the way to the National training group, which is a dedicated squad of swimmers (middle teens to early twenties) who are preparing for competition at the Canadian Championship Level. The past season was a most successful successful one. The team posted its highest platings ever at the Regional Regional Level. (In a metro region of over 35 teams, NEWAC was second at the novice championships, fourth at the 'C' level championships, and eighth at the end of season overall championship meet). Kathleen Nichols, Malcolm Holbrook, Holbrook, Reza Shaffaf and Jenny Ellis all took high point awards (top swimmer in the meet) for their age group at one or more of these competitions. competitions. A number of athletes also broke through to the National level meets and performed very well there. Diane Jenkins and Toby Limcbeer competed at Youth Nationals, with Toby continuing on to Senior Nationals Nationals later in the summer. Toby is the first NEWAC swimmer to achieve the "Sr. National standard and at the young age of 17, placed 28th among the senior men in the country for the sprint 50m fly. This is obviously an up-and- coming club. The highlight team meet for the top swimmers was the Eastern Cup (Division II Nationals) held in July in St. John's, Newfoundland. A squad of 11 made the trip, four for the first time at this level, and placed 14th out of 60 overall with our boys' squad placing eighth. Toby Limcbeer, Neil Murray, Devon Devon Preston, and Dave James all contributed contributed to the excellent boys' placing, placing, with Toby bringing home two bronze and a silver. Based on their results from last year, this is obviously and up-and- coming club. The girls' relay of Alison Ecuwcs, Kelly Ogilvie, Mackenzie Hudgin, and Jenny Ellis turned in an inspired fourth place finish and set a time which ranks them among the best 15 to 17-ycar-old squads in Canada. The novice (beginning competitive) competitive) programs start again the week of September 26. A onc-day-pcr- week (45 min.) program is offered for the youngest swimmers (minimum (minimum of 7 years), with a simple requirement requirement that new members be able to swim one length of the pool and be comfortable swimming on their back. Two and three day programs arc offered for older and more advanced children. These groups lead into the regular competitive training groups once the young athletes have learned the necessary skills. Novice programs run on Monday and Friday Friday at 5:00 p.m. and Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. Programs arc filling up quickly, but there arc still some spaces left. "The skill requirements for entry into the programs are very open," say coaches Karen and Michael Holbrook. Holbrook. "Swimming has something for every size, physiology, and ixxly ty|>o. We have sprint races for the fast-jumpy tyi>os, distance races for the not-so-bouncy steady workers, and we compete in four different stroke categories. Every swimmer has their favourite event and every swimmer gets their chance to race at the appropriate level. There's no silling silling on the bench in swimming," the coaches added. mation can call the club registrar, Anyone interested in registering Marilyn Shaffaf, at 697-0511, or the their child or in getting more infor- coaches at 372-5951.
