Local Resident Teaches English^ In Lithuania "There arc too many of them. You must speak in complicated English to scare them." I looked at the director of the university university in disbelief. How could I prepare prepare a speech using complicated English English in only five minutes? This past summer, I was a participant participant with Youth Mission International, International, a Christian Missions organization that had teams in Canada, the United States, Columbia, Peru, and Lithuania. Lithuania. As a member of the Lithuania team I was able to share Christ's love and hope with hundreds of Lithuanian Lithuanian children as well as a number of high school and university students. The program started with an intense intense one-week orientation in Ancast- er, Ontario. During this time, we enjoyed enjoyed getting to know one another, building unity into our teams, and worshipping God. Seven people from across North America landed in Vilnius, Lithuania on July 3rd. We were soon joined by the rest of our team: nine Lithuanians and Dan from British Columbia. The seventeen of us shared many experiences experiences over the next six weeks of our assignment in Panavezys, Lithuania. We visited six kindergartens and one orphanage while in Lithuania where we shared songs, puppets, Bible stories and games with the kids. It was great but challenging. If you are considering a trip overseas, don't let anyone tell you that the language language barrier is easy to overcome. It isn't. Once I got beyond "hi", "goodbye" "goodbye" and "goodnight" I came face-to- face with my ignorance and it was humbling. The team's effectiveness would have been almost nil without our Lithuanian team mates. They knew the language and the culture and were able to make Christ's message message of hope understandable to die people. The team's other focus was teaching teaching conversational English. I offered to take responsibility for this assignment assignment but was having second thoughts when I learned that 270 people had signed up instead of the expected 120. As I described earlier, the school director suddenly demanded that I scare away as many people as possible using complicated English. As I said a silent prayer, I launched into my speech and was pleasantly surprised when tire students starting laughing. It was working! They hadn't understood a word I said! As it turned out, we were able to help about 210 Lithuanian students improve their English speaking skills. Aside from the fun I hud teaching ( it always helps to be a bit outrageous) I discovered that I love Lithuania. The people there arc quiet but loving, simple but generous, and gentle but strong. I made many friends in that little country and have memories that will last a lifetime. Will 1 go back? There may be an opportunity for me to teach computers computers at the Lithuhanian Christian College College and while the position is volunteer, volunteer, I would love to do it, However, the one thing I learned for sure this summer is that God the Father loves zj me and has only the best in store for ^ me. One of my priorities right now is to find gainful employment but my future is up to God. I'm learning not to plan too far ahead so that God can fcrl lead the way. If 1 don't return to Lilli- tiania it's because God has something ol even more exciting in store, In any m case, I'm ready when God says "let's live the adventure!"
