Tlie principal of Orono Public School is requesting a school crossing crossing Main St. "Currently, in the Village of Orono, Orono, there exists no crosswalk for school children to cross Main Street on their way to and from Orono Public School," states a letter to Clarington Council from David Gray. "At the present time, there are 11 students ranging in age from four years to 11 years who must cross Main Street in order to attend our school." Gray cites heavy traffic and "many motorists (who) do not obey the posted speed limits." The principal also writes of his concern for the seniors who live in the Durham Seniors' Complex and must cross Main Street to get to a number of amenities in the village. Gray's recommendation is for a school crossing with a crossing guard to "guarantee the safety of our students." He also notes, a vote of support for the crossing comes from the school's Liaison Officer, Mike Marks, of the Durham Region Police. Police. Council has sent the letter off to the Director of Public Works for a review and a report back. More than 1,000 students attend Courtice Secondary - about a quarter quarter of them smoke, figures Milovick. While the new law may be helpful helpful in getting people to cut down on smoking, he says, it has the poten tial to create more problems. "For instance, how will the policy policy be enforced during the day and after hours?" The Northumberland Clarington School Board has informed principals principals that a Tobacco Control Enforcement Enforcement Officer will monitor the smoke-free policies in schools. INTOWNE GALLERY & GIFT SHOPPE However, Milovick wonders who would fill'this role. He doubts any student or teacher would volunteer for the job. Like Taylor, Milovick awaits an updated copy of the legislation before before drawing up a school policy. At Clarke High School, the smoke free policy has been in place since the beginning of the year with few problems says vice-president Caroline McNamara. "We've asked the students not to smoke on school property or any properties immediately adjacent to the school." Most smokers will go to local restaurants within walking distance from the school. McNamara admits this presents additional strains on local local merchants, but the school will work with them to cope with tiw'j new law. ' ' ,vW "We support the intent of the new legislation and believe the number number of young smokers will decrease because of it. It doesn't make sense to teach kids about healthy lifestyles and then promote smoking." McNamara would have liked more time to prepare students before putting the no smoking policy into effect, however. Two students have been sent home for smoking on school property property since the beginning of the year. Part of their penalty will be reading reading an educational package and completing an answer sheet about the dangers of smoking. The Ontario School Boards' Association Association has directed schools to promote the smoke-free policy through posters and no smoking signs around the buildings as well as announcements by the principal. Board officials recognize that education education regarding the health effects of smoking coupled with the changes changes to the act are integral to changing behavior. New Schools to Be Completed by September, '96 From Page One a committee will be tormed with that purpose in mind. In the case of Newcastle Village, there will also ,be the question of what to do witli the old school once a! new building is. up.
