Section Two The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, October 5,1994 7 Hi-C Fundraisers Donate $1,000 to New Kitchen at Trinity Glubs and Organizations St. John Ambulance Looking For Patient Care Volunteers Members of the Trinity United Church Hi-C youth group have contributed $1,000 to the church's Kitchen Fund from money raised in the past year. In addition, the group will be making a smaller donation donation to the Avicare Bird Rehabilitation Centre. Speaker Named for Women of Distinction Dinner Women from around the region will be gathering on Thursday, Nov. 3, 1994, for the 13th annual YWCA Women of Distinction Awards. The guest speaker at the dinner will be the President and owner of The Body Shop Canada, Inc. Margot Franssen. Along with changes to this year's list of categories, the Women of Distinction Distinction Planning Committee has changed the location of the annual YWCA fundraising dinner. This year the dinner will be held at the LVIV, the St. George's Ukrainian Orthodox Hall. This move to a more central location, has also meant a change in catering. Change of Command forgea Cadets The Bowmanville Sea Cadets said farewell to their commanding officer, Lt. Commander Don Foster, CD, during a change of command command ceremony last month. Lt. Commander Foster has received a three-year appointment as CIL Officer, which means he will be serving serving as an intermediary between 13 local cadet organizations and headquarters. At the ceremony on September 20, the CO was presented presented with a decorative paddle as a souvenir of his command. Making Making the presentation in the above photo is CP02 Cathy Smart. The paddle was made by S/Lt Melanie Brooks. Lt. Michael Carter, CD, becomes the new Commanding Officer for Bowmanville. Garington Mayor Diane Hamre was also honored at the change of command ceremony for her support of the Sea Cadet program. Diners will be treated to a festive and light Italian meal provided by M & G Italian Catering of Oshawa. A reception before the annual dinner dinner begins at 6 p.m. and dinner begins approximately one hour later. New Name for CSO Program The -Newcastle Community Service Service Order Programme Inc. has recently recently changed its name and it was officially announced at their Annual General meeting which was held on Wednesday, September 28,1994. An election of officers also took place to fulfil the responsibilities of the Board of Directors for the 1994/ 95 term. The Clarington Community Justice Justice Programme Inc. is jointly funded by the Ministry of Solicitor General and Correctional Services and Ministry Ministry of Community and Social Services. Services. Lyn Todd is the Executive Director Director of the program. The agency is 1 responsible for supervising alternative alternative measures clients, and both young and adult offenders who have been ordered by the Court to perform a specified number of unpaid community community service hours. In the Municipality of Clarington, the program works with in excess of 70 local non-profit and tax supported groups which provide placements for the C.S.O. clients, many who possess a wide variety of skills. As a member of the Brigade, Brigade, you will provide volunteer patient patient care at a variety of public events, such as parades, hockey games, concerts and cultural events. You will be trained as a top-notch first aider and your distinctive black and white uniform will tell people that when someone needs help you'll be there! In addition to your duties as a patient care provider, the Brigade offers the opportunity to gain other valuable experience including leadership, leadership, communication and interpersonal skills. Anyone from age 8 to 65 who has a sense of responsibility to the community community and enjoys helping other people people can join the St. John Ambulance Brigade. Age 8, 9 or 10 is a super time to join the Brigade as a Junior member. Juniors learn St. John Ambulance Ambulance first aid, health care and safety safety skills; earn certificates and badges for their uniforms and visit sporting, cultural and community events as part of the St. John family. Challenge and excitement best describe being a Cadet in the Brigade. Cadets, ages 11 top 15 are challenged by a proficiency proficiency program of life skills includ ing wilderness survival, nutrition, health, camping, astronomy and team sports leading to the Grand Prior's Award. Crusaders, ages 16 to 20, take charge of the situation. They assess assess the hazards and provide leadership leadership in times of emergency. Being a Crusader with the Brigade means having the knowledge, skill and ability ability to assist others in an emergency situation. Adults of the Brigade undergo undergo first aid training, and strengthen strengthen their skills by participating in competitions and providing volunteer patient care at public events. MUNICIPALITY OF CLARINGTON APARTMENTS IN HOUSES NOTICE TO TENANTS AND OWNERS Homeowners are now legally obligated to make sure their apartment units are safe. Legislation now permits homeowners to have one self-contained apartment in detached, semi-detached and row/town houses provided that they meet standards prescribed in the Building Code, Fire Code and Regulation 384 made under the Planning Act. FIRE CODE REQUIREMENTS Recent changes to the Ontario Fire code now require home owners who rent part of their homes as apartments to meet minimum fire safety requirements. Every owner is responsible for ensuring that smoke alarms are immediately installed in. apartments. Other minimum standards for fire separations, fire exits and electrical safety must be met by July 14, 1996. BUILDING CODE REQUIREMENTS The Ontario Building Code standards cover such things as ceiling height, room and window size and ventilation. If a homeowner is installing a new second unit in their house, they must get a building permit or a change of use permit before starting. In addition, a building permit may be needed for repairs or renovations required to make an apartment safe. PLANNING REQUIREMENTS Building and fire standards are set at the Provincial level, and are uniform across Ontario, however, planning standards are established by municipalities. The Planning Act Regulation set limits on the planning standards municipalities can apply to houses with two units; however, compliance to various standards is required for the purpose of assessing a building permit application.
