It's Gary Armstrong Armstrong and his flair for the dramatic. Back in late-April, when the Eagles Eagles last stepped on the ice for a meaningful game, it was Armstrong who sent a capacity crowd at the Recreation Complex into a frenzy. His goal with 22 seconds left in regulation regulation time lifted the Eagles into a 5-5 tie with Rockton in game seven of their All-Ontario semi-final series. series. Armstrong, back with the Eagles as one of their over-age players for this season, was at it again on Sunday Sunday night. Parked to the side of the net, he re-directed a shot by Doug Wright that made its way through the pads of Uxbridge Bruins goaltender Mike Moscariello, giving the Eagles a 3-2 win in their regular season debuL The goal came with only one second second remaining in the game. Should the Eagles be looking ahead to repeating as Central League champions for the third year in succession, Armstrong's goal- scoring skill is just one of the contributing contributing factors the team will need from their veteran players. "The veterans know and understand understand what winning the league means," said coach Mark Watson during a post-game interview. "We got close (to the finals) last year, and a lot of the returning players have the hunger to get back there. They will push the younger guys and let them know what is expected expected of them, and what is going to come." Newcomer Jay Cannings did most of the work on the game- winning goal. The speedy centre- man raced the length i of the ice,.., gained control of a loose puck in Uxbridge's zone, and fed Wright ; with a pass as he snuck in off his point position. The goal capped off a period in which the Eagles spent much of their time hemmed in their own zone. Having nine penalties called against them, compared to only four for Uxbridge, had much to do with this fact. Twice during the period, with the game knotted at 2-2, the Eagles were forced to kill penalties while two men short. The first came with just under seven minutes and lasted for 1:40, while the second -- for 24 seconds -- came later in the period, with only 2:39 left. During that span, it was goal- tender Barry Crawford whom coach Watson credited with giving "a great effort," to keep his team in the game. Derek Anderson had a first period period tally for Bowmanville, while Chad Taylor notched a power play marker in the second period. Bowmanville Bowmanville led 1-0 after the first, while the teams headed into the third tied 2-2. Darryl Whitlock and Ryan Jefferson Jefferson had the goals for Uxbridge, whose record dropped to 1-1 following following a 9-2 victory in their home opener opener on Friday night against Bobcay- gcon. Anderson converted a two-on- one break in the opening period, while Taylor's goal was the result of a quick release from the slot during a power play in the second period. Uxbridge finally solved Crawford Crawford in the second period, tying the game up with two goals in a span of 1:46. Whitlock scored on a slapshot to the short side, while Jefferson banged in a loose puck while lying Triple F Bowling League Results Ron Bonsma 10, John Buma 9, Peter Flonk 7, Jake Dykslra 6, Mcllc Rozcma 6, Dirk VanAbbcma 6, Harry Harry Elircl 6, Minnie Kaldcway 5, Hotly VandcrGaast 5, Piet Glasbcr- gen 4, Scbold Wcssclius 4, Gordon dcJager4 High single Indies -- Minnie Kaldcway 243 High single men -■ Ron Bonsma 290 High triple ladies - Greta Klompmnkcr 662 High triple men -- Allied Van- derGaast 668 High avemge ladies - Minnie Kaldeway 197 High average men - Ron Bonsma Bonsma 205 flat on the ice in front of Crawford. With a determined work ethic, and a solid performance from Moscariello Moscariello in goal, Uxbridge could prove a formidable opponent as the season wears on. Their gritty effort on Sunday night is the type of game that the Eagles can expect from many of their opponents. "After winning the league championship, championship, every team will be out to beat us," said Watson. "We have to be ready because teams will be playing playing us harder. We have to show up to play every night." With six regulars out of the lineup lineup due to injury or suspension, Watson Watson was satisfied with the outcome, despite noting that the play was sloppy. Jay Cannings (#19) found himself in alone against Uxbridge goaltender Mike Moscariello during the home opener for the Bowmanville Eagles at the Recreation Complex on Sunday night. The boys had a very busy weekend weekend as they played Friday in Ajax against the Knights. The Toros started started this game with a short bench, but after a couple of shifts, came up to full strength and manhandled the Ajax squad to a 15-0 win. It was another another shutout for the Toros goaltcnd- ing tandem, and a confidence- booster for the rest of the team. Travelling to Barrie on Saturday, the coaching staff were hoping the boys weren't over confident because unlike Ajax, who lost eight players from last year's squad to triple 'A' (including their goalie), the Colts should have a better team. This game was a little faster and a lot more physical as there were 12 penalties handed out by the referees, six to each team. The Toros proved to be the stronger team as they beat the Colts by a 9-2 score. Sunday, the Toros played a penalty-free penalty-free game against Whitby that developed into a very fast and exciting exciting game. Whitby scored the only goal of the first period and it looked like the Toros were in for a game. The very boisterous fans of Whitby thought that they had taken all the wind from Bowmanville's sails, but as the game went on, it was Whitby who came back to the harbor underpowered. underpowered. With 42 goals for and four goals against, eight points in the bank, and many more games ahead, it seems the Square Boy Pizza Toros arc on the right track and heading in the proper direction for a very successful successful season.
