As reported here earlier, he has split from trainer Lou Duva, and has recently been spending time with legendary trainer Angelo Dundee, who guided heavyweight champion Muhammed Ali throughout his career. Nick, 28, hasn't fought since March, but is hoping to have a fight before the month of October closes out. He has returned from Florida where he spent some time training, and is currently back home in Virginia. In 25 professional fights, Nick has only lost three times (to Aaron Davis, Anthony Jones, James McGirt). All of his defeats came at the hands of world title contenders Goodyear Eagles Dodge Bullets with a 9-2 Victory BRING ON THE MOJACKS -- The Bowmanville Eagles are eagerly awaiting their first big test of the year when they entertain the Port Perry MoJacks this Sunday night at the Recreation Complex. It would have been nice if the two teams would have remained undefeated, but that scenario was dashed over the weekend when Port Perry lost to Lakeficld on home ice Sunday night. Still, based on the good sized crowd that was on hand to watch the Bobcaygcon game last week, the stands should be filled for Sunday's rivalry. Game time is 7:30 p.m. BASEBALL BANQUET -- The Clarington girls' slo-pitch league will be holding their annual awards night this evening, beginning at 7:00 p.m. at the Recreation Complex. Awards will be presented to regular season and tournament champions in three different age divisions. With any luck, we'll have some team photos to offer in next week's edition. BASEBALL BANQUET #2 -- The Kendal Eagles players and executive members invite all of their fans to their year-end awards evening and dance that will be taking place in the banquet hall of the Orono Arena this Saturday night. Tickets for the 9:00 p.m. dance can be purchased at the door, or by calling Mike Robinson at 786-2106. GONE FISHIN' -- As a follow up to our mention last week of the calls that have come into the office from anglers who have caught big fish during the fall salmon ran, another message was left on our desk when we arrived bright and early on Monday morning. Somebody out there landed a 20 pounder. We wonder if anyone has caught a bigger one? Dennis Pizzeria Visits Burlington The Dennis Pizzeria minor novice novice Toros entered their first tournament tournament play in Burlington over the Thanksgiving weekend. Prior to the tournament, in a tune-up game on October 5 at Darlington Darlington Arena, the Toros showed the non-slop forechecking and back- checking which has been the trademark trademark of this club so far this season. The Toros managed only 15 shots against a very defence oriented oriented Pickering club, but still came out on top by a score of 4-1. Scoring were Bryan Barchard with two, the first being assisted by Allan McGrath; Corey Oliver, assisted by Rene Cartier; and Allan McGrath, assisted by Stephen Comclisscn. The tournament play in Burlington Burlington featured the closest and most exciting exciting hockey for this team to date. Playing four very physical games in 48 hours took its toll on the boys, who were visibly tired in their semifinal semifinal game against the eventual tournament tournament winners from Erindalc. All players turned in fine perfor mances and showed their character and determination even when faced with unaccustomed rough play. Playing some of their finest hockey of the season were: Andrew Fracz with outstanding defence and puck handling at both ends of the ice; Stephen Comclisscn with solid offence as well as exceptional back checking; Ryan Fowler showing excellent excellent play-making. ability along with a nice scoring touch; Trevor Wadell provided very dependable defence, along with his strong offensive offensive abilities. Scoring was provided by Bryan Barchard with 10 points, Stephen Comclisscn with five, Trevor Wa- dcll, Mike Richardson and Corey Oliver with four, Daniel Michael, 'Ryan Fowler, Chris Trace and Allan McGrath with three, Rene Cartier and Andrew Fracz with two, and Brad Griffin, Chris Gerrits, Jamie Whitehead and Derek VanHcuvelcn with one point each. Congratulations, team, on a fine effort, and we look forward to your nest game. by Brad Kelly It wasn't close, nor was it expected expected to be. The Bowmanville Goodyear Eagles, Eagles, who entered Sunday night's game against the Bobcaygcon Bullets Bullets as the overwhelming favorites to extend their perfect start to the season, did just that. And in a big way. Bowmanville bettered the Bullets by a converted touchdown, racking up a 9-2 victory in a laugher. The victory was the fifth for Bowmanville in as many starts. They have now oulscored their opposition opposition by a 35-16 margin. Curtis Hodgins led the point parade, parade, scoring three times and adding one assist, while defenceman Darryl McArthur had a goal and two assists. assists. The strong game by McArthur couldn't have come at a better time. A representative from the Central Scouting Bureau was in attendance at Sunday's game, watching the progress of McArthur and Jay Cannings. Cannings. Both are 16 years of age, and eligible for this summer's OHL draft. Jercmie Pate added to the offence with a pair of goals, while Chad Taylor, Todd Cannings, and Ryan Becker had one apiece. Bowmanville Bowmanville led 2-0 after the opening period, period, and increased its advantage to 7- 0 after two. Legion Places Three Teams In Top Five of Crib Tourney 1 An Oshawa couple won the annual annual Dude and Doric Hills cribbage tournament at Branch 178 Royal Canadian Canadian Legion on Saturday, Oct. 9th; Bowmanvile teams took the second, third and fifth prizes. Joyce McCrae and Lisa Proctor won top honors. Larry Little and John Broome came second and Theresa Cowle and Don Proctor were third. Fourth place went to Charlotte Thompson and Audrey Stevens of Port Hope. Doreen Park and Marg Perris of Bowmanville were fifth in the 40 team competition. Next year's tournament will be held at the Oshawa Legion branch. Their five goal barrage in the second second period came during a span of just under eight minutes. Bobcaygcon broke the shutout bid of goaltender Jeff Reid when they tallied the final two goals of the third period. Eric Bagshaw and Andy Billings, on the power play, had Bobcaygeon's markers. Outside of a couple of punishing hits by Bobcaygeon's Kevin Reynolds Reynolds (on Jay Cannings), and Billings Billings (on Ryan Becker), the Bullets showed why they have won only seven games in 74 outings the past three years. Their talent base, as in previous years, is very thin. They would be hard-pressed to stay competitive in a high school league. When matched against a club like Bowmanville, who have the potential potential to win a third straight Central League championship, the end result is predictable. The victory could have been by a much wider margin if not for the play of Bobcaygcon goaltender Chad Vandam in the first period. He made a number of fine saves over the first twenty minutes to keep his team close. Mercifully, Vandam was lifted from the game after Hodgins scored Bowmanville's fifth goal of the evening evening midway through the second period. period. Sunday's victory was the second of the weekend for Bowmanville, who garnered an identical 9-2 victory victory in Lakeficld on Friday night. Paul Gagne potted two goals, with singles going to J. Cannings, Brian Anstey, Taylor, Gary Armstrong, Armstrong, Doug Parkin, Steve De- smedt, and Becker. Bowmanvillc-built a lead of 3-1 after the first period, and carried a 5-2 advantage into the third. THE SCOOP - Jeff Murphy is expected to be in the Eagles' lineup when they visit Port Perry on October October 30. He has yet to see any game action after breaking his hand in training camp.. Jason McQuat is attending attending the training camp of the Wichita Thunder of the Central League...Iain Fraser, of the Quebec Nordiques, has asked for permission to practice with Bowmanville while the NHL labor dispute continues. The Eagles were more than happy to accommodate the former Oshawa General. Gary Armstrong (white sweater) was prevented from getting to any rebound that may have been left around the Bobcaygcon net during during Sunday's Jr. C game at the Recreation Complex. Bowmanville managed to extend their winning streak to five games with a 9-2 drubbing of Bobcaygcon. The team played an exhibition game in Oshawa just four hours before before hosting the visiting Aurora team at the Darlington Arena where they were again victorious. Our first game of the day saw Andrew Andrew Rahmc record a shutout with the first two goals going to Brent Foley, then Stephen Ncllcs scoring twice and Bryan Mercer once to complete die scoring. Once again, it was a team effort, with assists going to Matt Tamblyn (2), Jason Morrison (2), Justin Ross (1), Shane Gonsalves (1), Allan Baker (1), Bryan Mercer (1). The Oshawa team was held to just one shot, proving that backchccking and a strong defensive game by everyone everyone will result in victory. In our second game of the day, a very close, tight-checking game saw the Toros defeat Aurora 6-4. Brent Foley from Bryan Mercer scored the only first period goal. The second period was all Toros, with Stephen Nelles from Malt Tamblyn Tamblyn putting the team up by two. Then, with the Toros playing one man short, Jason Emond scored twice. On the next line change, Brent Foley scored to put the team out in front.5-0. Brent Foley scored again Indore the period was over to give the boys a commanding six-goal lend. During that scoring spree, Matt Tamblyn, Brent Stadler, Drew Sharp, Allan Baker, and Bryan Mercer all picked up nskists, The Skylight team was again anticipating anticipating that big hole for the shutout, hut Aurora had different ideas, scoring scoring four unanswered third period goals, lint Ilowmunville held on for tiie victory. This week, the players will lie put through two tough practices before travelling to Aurora Saturday and Defence is as important as offence. Backchccking is as important as forc- chccking. The next week will determine whether or not the senior boys' soccer soccer teàm at Bowmanville High School will prolong its season. The extension they will be seeking seeking is a berth in the LOSSA 'AAA' playoffs. The top four teams in both the east and west divisions qualify for post season play. In Bowmanville's case, they will have to string some wins together over their final three games to have a chance at advancing. advancing. "With that many games left, sure there is a chance," said coach John Morris. Bowmanville headed into the final final five games of the season this week, hosting Anderson on Monday, Monday, followed by a match with cross-town rival, Courtice, yesterday. yesterday. They close out a busy week by entertaining Percyma on Friday. Last Thursday afternoon, injuries and illness left the team with a depleted depleted lineup, as they suffered a 5-2 defeat to Done van. Both of Bowmanville's goals came in the second half. "When you consider the number of players who were playing out of position, we did well," said Morris. With no varsity junior team, this year is a developmental one for the Bowmanville seniors. They arc hoping hoping to build a solid foundation this year, with intentions of challenging for the LOSSA title next year. But, if the opportunity comes up in this year's playoffs Bowmanville wouldn't mind at all. The team is also carrying an international flavor. Rotary exchange student Karl Ro- dert, of Sweden, has earned a spot on the team. SAVE on deductible of most windshield insurance claims plus...
