20 The Clarington Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, October 22,1994 Writers Read from Work at Trent University Montreal writer Neil Bissoondath and prairie novelist Rudy Wiebe are among 10 writers who will read from their work at Trent this fall as part of the sixth annual Writers Reading Series. Series. The popular public series has expanded expanded to 10 readings this year from the usual six. A traditional mix of new and established, local and national national prose writers and poets includes includes Trent novelist Paul Zeleza and award-winning Canadian authors Aretha Van Herk and Janice Kulyk Keefer in the new year. The readings are free and open to the public. They usually take place on Wednesday evenings in one of the Trent's five residential colleges. This year, two readings (by Rudy Wiebe and Paul Zeleza) will take place at the Peterborough Public Library. An informal reception follows each reading. reading. Poet Andy Wainwright kicks off the series October 19 with a reading in Otonabee College senior common room at 8 p.m. A Canadian literature professor at Dalhousie University and fiction editor of the Dalhousie Review, Wainwright has published five books of poetry, the most recent of which is Landscape and Desire: Poems Selected and New (Mosaic Press, 1992). His poems have appeared appeared in various journals and magazines magazines including Prism International, Quarry, Saturday Night, Waves, The Antigonish Review, and Canadian Literature. On November 9, poet Lawrence Hutchman reads in the Traill College senior common room at 8 p.m. Currently Currently teaching at the Université de Moncton, Centre Universitaire Saint- Louis-Maillet in Edmundston, N.B., Hutchman has published four books of poetry: The Twilight Kingdom (1973): Explorations (1975); Blue Riders (1985); and Foreign National which was just published last May. His poems have appeared in four anthologies. anthologies. Prairie novelist Rudy Wiebe reads November 23 at 8 p.m. in the Peterborough Peterborough Public Library auditorium (place to be confirmed). Beginning with Peace Shall Destroy Many (1962), he has published six novels. The most recent, Discovery of Strangers, was released this fall and centres on John Franklin's Arctic expedition expedition in search of the northwest passage. It continues his interest in historical fiction and native subjects which he first explored in The Temptations Temptations of Big Bear, winner of the Governor General's Award in 1973. He has published three volumes of short stories, a novella (The Mad. Trapper, 1983) and a play (Far as the Eye Can See, 1980) in collaboration with The Theatre Passe Muraille.
