The Hon. Sergio Marchi, federal Minister of Immigration, will be the special guest of MP Alex Shepherd and the Durham Liberals. The evening will include an ethnic foods buffet and prize give-aways to raise funds. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. CHILDREN'S COSTUME PARTY IN NEWCASTLE - Newcastle Family Connection presents a Children's Halloween Costume Party for kids age 10 and under. It's on Saturday, October 29, between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. at the St. Francis of Assisi Parish Hall in Newcastle. There is a fee of $2 per child or $5 per family. Kids under one year old are admitted free. Refreshments, games, door prizes and grab bags are all part of the fun. (Children under 5 must be accompanied by an adult). HAUNTED ORCHARD OPENS FOR TOURS - Everyone is invited to visit the "Haunted Orchard" on Middle Road October 28, 29 and 30. Empire Orchard is offering wagon rides through the property, with assistance from students of the Courtice Secondary School senior drama club who will be providing the scary effects. Tours start at six p.m. on all three nights. After the ride through the orchard, you can enjoy a bowl of hot soup and apple cider in the bam. HARVEST HALLOWEEN - On Sunday, October 30, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., the Clarke Museum will be hosting its third annual Harvest Halloween Party at the museum. Games contests, feats of strength, a pumpkin pie bake-off,-hot cider and popcorn are among the attractions. There is something for everyone, young and old, during this special family fun day. Admission is one dollar for adults, 50 cents for children or $2 for a family. There will also be a costumed story-teller, pumpkin carving and pumpkin drying demonstrations and a special Halloween exhibition. At the Harvest Halloween event, Mayor Diane Hamre will draw names of lucky winners from the leisure services committee's "Discover Clarington" passport promotion. This Tuesday, between 10 a.m. and noon, there will be help with knitting problems through a program led by Doris Mould. Please bring your own needles and yam. THURSDAY, NOVEMBER 3RD WOMAN ABUSE AWARENESS MONTH - A presentation by the Company of Sirens theatre group on the topic of violence against women will take place on Thursday, November 3rd, from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Bowmanville High School. Admission is free and the event is sponsored by Alliance House Inc. and the Ontario Women's Directorate. T-shirts made by women and children in the community who have been subject to violence will be on display. They are part of "The Clothesline Project," a powerful and startling message which bears witness to experiences of violence and celebrates the transformation of victims into survivors. FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 4TH MEET THE CANDIDATES - The Bowmanville Business and Professional Women's Club hosts an all-candidates' meeting at the Bowmanville High School on Friday, November 4th. It takes place from 7:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. Plan to attend. YULETIDE AT THE MILL ~ From November 18th to 20th, the Visual Arts Centre in Bowmanville will present Yuletide at the Mill. This is a craft sale, with entertainment, treats for the children, hot cider, gingerbread, and an opportunity to do some holiday shopping. The yuletide festivities at the mill coincide with a display of 100 impressive small paintings that are ideal Christmas gifts. CARD TOURNAMENTS AT LEGION -- Three new card tournaments will be taking place Sunday afternoons at the Bowmanville Legion in November and December. On November 20 there will be a cribbage tournament. BOWMANVILLE SANTA CLAUS PARADE - You'll want to put a big red and green circle around Saturday, November 19th. That's the date for the annual Bowmanville Santa Claus Parade. Plan to attend this traditional kick-off to the festive season in the Bowmanville area. UNITY IN DIVERSITY WEEK - The second week in November has been designated Unity in Diversity Week. Mayor Diane Hamre will formally proclaim the week on Monday, November 7. On Saturday, November 12, there will be a multicultural celebration in the afternoon at the Bowmanville High School. Hours are from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. You can enjoy multicultural food, music, costumes, songs and dances at the high school. Then, on Wednesday, November 16, there will be a panel discussion on the topic of Unity in Diversity. This discussion takes place at 7:30 p.m. at Ontario Street Public School in Bowmanville. Panelists include a delegate from the Ministry of Citizenship, Dr. David Smith of the Hospital for Sick Children and a local representative. The Unity in Diversity Committee urges everyone to plan to attend these events because they benefit the whole community.
