10 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, November 2,1994 Legion Support for Athletics Dates Back to Early 1950's One-third of the Canadian track and field athletes and all Canadian medal winners at the 1984 Olympics in Los Angeles were alumni of the Legion's track and field camps and many other Canadian athletes, including including Wayne Gretzky, got their start in sports programs sponsored by The Royal Canadian Legion, Legion support for track and field dates back to the early 1950's. During During those early days, Ontario Hydro Branch No. 277, sponsored the former former Canadian Olympic Training Plan. The branch organized and sponsored sponsored a number of projects to finance the program, including special track meets and big band concerts. The success of the program was such that the branch put forward a resolution at the 1956 Dominion Convention in Vancouver seeking the Legion's national national support for the Olympic Training Training Plan. Since then, the Legion has remained a staunch supporter of amateur amateur sport in Canada. The track and field program is designed designed to provide training - leading to competition at the national level - for young athletes. It provides the opportunity opportunity to visit other parts of Canada and mix with athletes, coaches and trainers from across the country. The program serves to encourage participants participants both as athletes and as citizens of Canada, The current track and field program program is highlighted by the annual athletic camp. The camp has been run every year since 1976 at locations ranging from St. John's Newfoundland, Newfoundland, to .Victoria, B.C. About 300 young Canadians, along with coaches, coaches, trainers and chaperons attend the three days of clinics and the two-day meet. The Legion is proud of its youth athletic program, but the national camp is only one of the many youth sport activities conducted by The Royal Canadian Legion. Many branches sponsor year-round programs programs and provincial commands organize organize meets and training camps for hundreds of young athletes. In addition to youth sports activities, activities, the Legion is active in many other other areas with programs to entertain, motivate and develop Canadian youngsters.
