Drama Club Presents "Memoirs of Brighton Beach" By Marcia Schryer Certain to dazzle audiences again this year, the Bowmanvillc High School drama department has begun auditions for the most recent theatre production. Drama department heads Mr. Lindop, Ms. Lawrence, and. Mr. Sobil have selected a comedy by Neil Simon entitled "Brighton Beach Memoirs" Memoirs" which promises to be a hit. The talented actors and singers at B.H.S. arc gearing up for a series of auditions which will begin the process process of giving life to the selected piece. Many hours of practice and dedication by staff and students go into making the plays at B.H.S. successful. successful. Good luck to all involved. The annual trip to the Stratford Festival was a great success. Nearly 30 students and 4 accompanying staff members returned to Bowmanvillc after the three-day excursion, which was enjoyed by all. The students in attendance ranged from grades 11 through to OAC and all were enriched enriched by three phenomenal play productions productions as well as a thorough back- stage tour. The success of the Peer Helping program at B.H.S. has been noted by many staff and students. Peer Helping Helping is a course offered at our school which benefits teachers and students. The course is available to grade 11, 12, and OAC students who excel in and enjoy particular areas of their studies. These students arc placed in cither grade 9 or 10 classes and act as mediators and assistants to the teachers teachers and students. The 12th annual trip to Glcnhousc Lodge-Gananoque is available to certain certain numbers of students involved in the Peer Helping program. The getaway, getaway, which is chaperoned this year by Mrs. Gallagher of the Mathematics Mathematics department, begins on November 9 at 8:30 a.m. and concludes on November November 11 at 3:00 p.m. Students included included have the opportunity to meet other peer helpers from schools around Ontario, and share experiences experiences related to the progiam. The outing, which is known to be comfortable, informative, and enthusiastic, allows students to gain sclf-confidcncc, form lasting friendships, and leant how to be more efficient helpers. All in attendance, attendance, as well as all students involved involved in the Peer Helping program, arc a part of the Ontario Peer Helpers Association (O.P.H.A.). Robert (Bob) Moorcroft as their board chair for the 1994-95 academic year. . Mr. Moorcroft is by no means a newcomer to the education arena. Although Although he has been an active member of the Durham College Board of Governors since 1990, his roots in education were established back in 1951 when he began as a teacher. From that time on, his commitment, dedication and professional expertise flourished in positions such as Vice Principal, Principal and School Superintendent. Superintendent. In 1989 he retired from his position as Chief Superintendent of Education for the Northumber land/Newcastle Board of Education, now known as Northumberland/ Clarington Board of Education. Mr. Moorcroft is a graduate of Queens University, with both a Bachelor Bachelor of Arts and a Bachelor of Education Education Degree. He also holds a Masters in Education from the University of Toronto as well as Special Education Certificate from York University and a Supervisory Officer's Certificate from the Ministry of Education. Mr -- Jlf 1 These little trick or treaters from the Pine Ridge Nursery School were getting a head start on Hallowe'en Hallowe'en early Monday morning, October 31st. The youngsters went on parade in downtown Bowman- ville to show off their colorful costumes and masks. They slopped by the Statesman office looking for treats, but had to settle for having their picture taken. We'll be ready with candy for them next year. Ashley Fellow at Trent University Jill Kcr Conway, author of The Road from Coorain, a best-selling memoir about growing up in the Australian Australian outback, comes to Trent this year as the Ashley Fellow. A social historian and pioneer in women's education, Conway will give a public lecture November 23 on Women and Education in North America, in Lady Eaton College lecture lecture hall at 8 p.m. She was the first female vice- president of the University of Toronto Toronto (1973-75) and the first female president of Smith College (1975-85) in Massachusetts. At Smith, Conway attracted considerable attention for her support of the prestigious women's women's university's decision to resist the 1970s trend towards co-education. Conway will spend four separate weeks at Trent talking to classes, meeting students and faculty. After her firs visit November 21-25, she will be back January 25.-29, February 6-10 and March 28-April 1. Since it was published in 1989, The Road from Coorain has sold , more than a million copies in the United States; Canada and Australia. The autobiography has been translated translated into French, Japanese and Hebrew and a film version is in the works. A sequel to Coorain called True North was recently released by Knopf Canada. Conway will sign copies at Trent University Bookstore November 24 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. True North begins where Coorain left off, with 25-year-old Jill Kcr's arrival at Harvard in 1961 to pursue a PhD in history. Three years later, she moved to Toronto with her husband John Conway, the first Professor of Canadian History at Harvard and the first Master of Founder's College at • York University. Of the 11 years she taught history at the University of Toronto, her final two years were as U of T vice-president of internal affairs. affairs. Conway is a distinguished scholar and chronicler of American and Canadian Canadian women's experience, especially especially in education, in the 19th and 20th centuries.
