r The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, November 9, 1994 9 Decision '94 Candidates for Public School Board -- Ward One Milt Dakin Rona Formosa Paul Nadeau mm v*y i Hi! My name is Milt Dakin. I was bom in Nova Scotia in 1938. I am married to Elizabeth and we have eight children, all of whom went through the local school system and graduated from Courticc Secondary School. Our youngest is in his second year at Lakchead University in Thur- day Bay. I have been involved in the community most of my life. I was president of the Parent Advisory Committee at MJ. Jobbs, worked with Scouts, etc. I was chairman of Newcastle Community Services Board, a National National Director of a life insurance company. I live and work in Ward 1. I believe wc must better prepare our children for university and the job market. They must be trained for the jobs that arc there now and will be in the future. We must have safer schools and stop the violence and abuse in our schools. You, the parents, are paying for an education system and I believe you are entitled to more input. I ask for your support and will do all that I can to hear your concerns and keep you informed. On November 14, please vote Milt Dakin, Public School Trustee in Ward 1. David Gray David Gray, a community college professor and 25-ycar resident of the community, is seeking re-election. David has served on all major board committees, including chairperson chairperson of Operations and Finance Committee. Committee. David has a conscientious desire to represent his community and provide a high standard of education at affordable affordable costs. He has worked with the community community and will continue to work towards innovative solutions to the many problems problems associated with an increasing enrollment enrollment and decreasing provincial financial financial support. We must provide and foster a safe, •positive, respectful learning environment environment for all students where learning is fun and creative and meets the needs of our children. Where the ownership of the program is shared with the students, students, parents, teachers, administrators, administrators, support staff, trustees and the concerned community. The Northumberland and Claring- ton Board has been innovative in cutting costs by forming partnerships in energy conservation with suppliers of natural gas, electricity and other fuels and by purchasing partnerships with other governmental agencies. Efficiencies Efficiencies have also been attained by sharing program, curriculum development development and resources with other boards. By doing business differently and more efficiently, the board was able to reduce its 1994 budget by $11 million, which includes a half million dollar saving in busing costs attained through staggered school hours. David, a strong, community- minded representative and a dedicated father of four students, pledges to use his experience and abilities to provide the best education for our children while placing a strong, controlled hand on increased costs. As the mother of a two-year-old son who will enter Dr. Emily Stowe School in two years, I am very interested interested in today's educational system. I feel even though the trustee's position position is portrayed as a part-time job, I want to give a 100 per cent, full-time effort. I have the time, energy and commitment to accomplish this goal. I have a strong desire to be that voice, that liaison for parents and teachers, not only conveying mandates from the board but also working with teachers and parents to present their needs and concerns back to the Board. Among the current issues and concerns concerns arc: •The need for safe, violcncc-frcc school environments. •Wc need to reduce the bloated bureaucracy, bureaucracy, ensuring as much of our tax dollar goes to the classroom as possible. •I feel there should be greater emphasis emphasis on core subjects (reading, writing, writing, spelling and math) with teacher- guided instruction, rather than the trend towards child-centered playing in the primary grades. •A greater level of academic excellence excellence can be achieved by standardized testing across the board. •Parents should be more active in the classroom as volunteers because the social contract has greatly increased increased studcnt/tcachcr ratios. Wc may need amendments to the Education Education Act in order to. have school governing governing councils made up of parents as a real decision-making body. Very importantly, wc cannot blame our children for educational inadequacies. inadequacies. It is not their fault. The system is to blame. Wc have some very fine educators educators out there. In many cases, they arc feeling the frustrations of this very demanding and important job they are doing. I feel I can bring a fair, unbiased dedication to the job of trustee to aid in the primary goal of quality education education for our students. Enniskillen resident, Paul Nadeau seeks to promote the implementation of the "life quality subjects," as a trustee trustee with the Northumberland and Clar- ington Board of Education. Nadeau said he believes in putting emphasis on good moral values to restore restore respect for one and all. Alan Garbe Now that Alan Garbe's daughter, Stephanie, is in grade one at Hampton Public School, he believes it is appropriate appropriate that he give of his time to make a contribution to the enhancement of the educational system. ON NOVEMBER 14,1994 ELECT Beverly Wakefield Accountability - Fiscal Management Student Achievement - Communication PUBLIC SCHOOL TRUSTEE, WARD 3 To serve the students and the taxpayers AirmoKim) iiv tie cfo for tie uevhey wakijuid campaign Alan, a Solina resident, wants to help build an educational system that provides the necessary stills, tools and knowledge so that today's child can grow and learn to be an effective participant in the computer-oriented economy which is part of every child's future. The most important issue is the formulation of the best curriculum to ensure that our students have the basic reading, writing and mathematical skills, combined with other skills necessary necessary for them to function in a highly technological society. We must find the proper combination combination of the basic principles of education education and other skills to ensure our students students grow in knowledge and personal self-confidence without frustrating their development. In order to help achieve these goals, wc need to have greater interaction interaction between parents and teachers and the educational system must work towards towards more precise assessment of students, students, their strengths and weaknesses and be accountable to parents so that all partners in the educational process understand and appreciate the potential potential of each student. Wc must provide a safe, secure school environment through methods which are not intrusive and provide the maximum amount of comfort and safety for all those involved in the educational educational system. The challenge facing the trustees and parents and teachers is to provide the best educational process possible, given the restricted funding available. It is necessary to implement cost saving saving procedures, but avoid discontinuing discontinuing important programs. Consideration Consideration must be given to combining school boards in order to remove duplication duplication and reduce such costs as busing, busing, supplies and services, reducing the number of trustees and shortening high school to four years. Alan Garbe decided to stand for .trustee because he has the advocacy skills to work and communicate with people, understand and analyze the issues, issues, focus on the resolution of the problems and the tenacity to keep searching for workable solutions. Bom in Toronto, he holds a four year Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics Economics and a Bachelor of Law degree from the University of Windsor Law School. After graduating, Alan worked in Toronto and subsequently moved to Markham and commenced practice specializing in corporate/commercial work and commercial litigation. "I also want to focus on reducing violence in and out of schools," he said. "I support a zero tolerance approach approach to violence in schools and believe believe that the only effective way to successfully reduce this problem is to return to education that teaches good traditional morals. The solution to the problem of violence in the school is not found in a valucs-frcc education." Some of the educational issues cited cited by Nadeau include the raising of standards and quality of education and the combining of school boards to reduce reduce unnecessary duplication of costs and the mis-usc of tax dollars. He suggests a four-year secondary program incorporating the OAC subjects subjects required for university in order to save millions in educational tax and replace the current-five-year program. Nadeau also believes in encourag ing and promoting a program involving involving parents more significantly in the education of their children. A devoted family man, he is married, married, with two young children in the public school system. He has served for the past 16 years as a police officer with the Durham Region.
