F The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, November 9, 1994 19 Halloween Party at Town Hall 0 Trick-or-treatcrs haunting downtown Bowmanvillc on Hallowe'en night were invited to drop by the Town Hall to see some "ghosts" decorating one of the councillor's offices. Ward Two Candidates Discuss Issues ' Ward Two (Bowmanvillc) Local Council candidates were asked to take a stand on proposed residential development near the Bowmanvillc Creek, off Hunt Street. David Wing said he was aware of the neighborhood opposition to the plan and tended to agree. "I am interested interested in attracting industry, but hot at any cost. Any development along creeks, flood plains, or environmentally environmentally sensitive areas must be given a lot of thought," ; Jim Kondrachuk declared he was dead set against it. "If we don't stop tearing up our land and polluting pur water, there's no future for any ;of us." ; Pal Pinglc felt she needed more •information to take a solid stand. "I •will review the issue. But I do feel that the area needs to be left for trails." During the forum, David Wing told voters he had concerns about the local housing boom out-pacing growth in recreational, cultural and industrial sectors. Jim Kondrachuk said the tax burden burden would be eased through recruiting recruiting more business. He stated key issues issues should include maintaining the natural environment, better sports programs, and improved public transit. transit. Pat Pingle spoke about the need to clean up the waterfront for the benefit of all residents. She would also like to see local people, rather than out-of-towners, getting the work on construction projects in Clarington. Today at CM Coodwrench the price on the ground is the price on the hoist. Period. by Carolyn Barkey Good evening fellow graduates, staff and guests. One of the hardest things I have ever had to do was write this speech. I found it next to impossible to sum up five years of memories into five minutes of a speech. But tonight is a night to remember the past as we look into the future and as J.F.K. once said, "No person or force can abolish a memory." We as graduates have commenced a new beginning in our lives this past September. Some have begun new jobs while ethers have continued our education in various places. In the past two months we have undergone numerous new experiences, met many people and braved all sorts of new stresses. More than at any other point in our lives. Suddenly, we have found out that the time has come to live in an adult world with adult obligations. obligations. But one thing I have discovered, discovered, at least with myself, is that when a person askes me how school is going the instant reply is simply...GOOD. simply...GOOD. Good is an answer that doesn't describe the depth of feeling involved adequately. William Bartlett once said that, "You may dream of the Niagara but words will never describe describe it." That is a phrase which I believe describes the deviation our lives have taken. Suddenly, we have been given new freedoms which we have had to evaluate and then come to our own decisions. Some of the decisions arc very minor and arc forgotten in a day. Other decisions such as deciding on a major in our degree at university will shape the rest of our lives. It is totally at our own discretion to succeed succeed or to falter. Once of Canada's former prime ministers summed it up well when he said, "Freedom is the right to be wrong, not the right to do wrong." But when I think about Courlice, I think about all the wonderful, crazy people I had the opportunity of "learning" with throughout the five years. I think of Sandi Ashton chatting chatting with all of the teachers and secretaries secretaries about everything under the sun, Natosha Dower SCREAMING her lungs out in support of teams and of the 'Hampton gang' hanging out by the lockers or going to JF dances with Sandi, Venus, Niki and Raylin. There were the fun times we had on student council two years ago when Ty and Brett thought they were cool and the great days like at L.O.S.S.A. volleyball last year. Nickcy Walt provided provided the leadership for our team to bum rubber and a match to light the fire. One day I'm sure many of us remember remember what happened many years ago when Jay Hemming was just a little boy. No, not when he was in kindergarten but back when he first wrestled in that novice L.O.S.S.A. wrestling tournament. Jay had never 'professionally' wrestled until that day and by showing raw talent and desire he prevailed as champion. By the last match, Jay literally had a hundred people cheering for him, the school and just showing 'Courticonc- an' pride. That was just one day when the support and friendship in our class was apparent. Our class has a immense amount of heart and it expressed itself during our time at Courlice. Whether through sports, special events or charity campaigns like Terry Fox, often often it was the very people sitting in the front rows tonight who initiated the programs and provide the leadership leadership for these events to succeed. Each and every person who has come to commencement tonight a participant is a success story. It doesn't matter how short or how long it took to get to this stage, the fact of the matter is that tonight you have passed the first major educational hurdle in your life. But, now we have new mountains to climb and new challenges to overcome. overcome. Even thought Mrs. Gilles chemistry and Koko's calculus have got us half way through first semester, semester, in two short months we start totally totally new courses all over again. We need guidance and who better to provide provide than Dr. Sticss, the author not our esteemed fellow graduate. Dr. Suess wrote a book called, Oh, the Places You'll Go!, which I quoted from at the beginning. This book is the graduation speech he always wanted to say but never got a chance. He talks of using your inner resources resources and talents to pick your path to the future. When you get all together and things are going good he says, "You'll be on your way up! You'll be seeing great sights! You'll join the high fliers who soar to high heights." In the next few weeks, months arid years there will be limes that go like Dr. Suess described. Times will be good, you'll be on top of the world and it will seem like nothing can go wrong but, sometimes it will. "I'm sorry to say so but, sadly, it's true that Bang-ups and Hang-ups can happen to you." When these times come and you wonder why you didn't just decide to become a basket-weaver, remember your friends you arc sitting with tonight. tonight. Take a look at the people you arc sharing this night with and appreciate appreciate and cherish the friendships you share. Give them a call and listen to a familiar voice that understands and doesn't judge. Keep in contact with these people and make them not just a friend from high school but a friend for life. A few weeks ago I had a black eye. How I got this black eye doesn't matter but the fact is when I had this black eye, I was very noticeable. To put it mildly, I received an enormous amount of attention. The good thing was that during that week I met at least thirty new classmates just from conversations that all started with the eye. No, I'm not suggesting that everyone everyone should go out and get a shiner, but, I do want to make a point. No matter what happens, take advantage of the characteristics that make you the unique individual you arc. "People "People all have one thing is common, they arc all different." Use your differences differences to your advantage and go out there and exploit the opportunities opportunities available to you. Meet people, have fun, leant a little while you do it and the next years of your life will fly by with great moments that will become cherished memories. As I conclude tonight I would like to thank people who have made an unmeasurable impact on my life. To my friends, especially Raylin, Rayna and Mike, thank you for being great people who I am proud to have spent the last five years experiencing life with. To Sandi, thank you for being the best friend anyone in the world could ask for. To the teachers and secretaries, thank you for being tough and preparing me so well for university. university. Your past efforts arc making my life easier in the present. I would like to especially thank Mrs. Fletcher for being my friend, my supporter and a very wonderful person. And, last but not least to my family: Thank you for being the biggest cheerleaders and supporters that I will ever need. I wish everyone good fortune and happiness happiness in the future.
