This election has been an important important learning exercise, allowing me to get into the nooks and crannies of our immense Ward. It has allowed me to meet the residents in their own bailiwicks bailiwicks giving me a better understanding understanding of the local issues which affect them. Since mid-summer I have been on the campaign trail trying to visit 5,000 residences and have succeeded in reaching my goal while I continue to knock on more doors. Many residents residents have commented on the quality of my campaign ic., literature, signs, an canvassing. My rationale for running running hard is that I felt the 1991 election election lacked a professional edge and had a lacklustre tone. My campaign has been pro-active, aggressive, community community based, and strived to set the political agenda this election. When voters examine the main themes of this election and the issues which Clarington Council has tried to seize on, they can point directly to Phil Manning I have identified the root cause of the problems in Clarington. While issues issues such as the industrial/rcsidential imbalance or high taxes for low services services are discussed as being the key issues, I believe that these are only symptoms of a dysfunctional council and a divided community. Current and past councils, crippled with infighting, have been ineffective in producing real results. The accomplishments accomplishments cited by incumbents have not satisfied the voters because there has been no progress in the areas that mean the most to them. "It costs too much to live here," and "I see no value value for my money," are frequent comments. comments. The other candidates running in Ward One have not demonstrated the ability to reconcile the situation and work peaceably for solutions to what we have all agreed are important issues. issues. I have witnessed insult and innuendo innuendo between incumbents and personal personal attacks from candidates. • - • ;•)' This type of behaviour has brdiight us to where we are now: a bickering, infighting, dysfunctional council and community. I do not believe I have oversimplified oversimplified the problem. Solutions come easier when goals and objectives objectives are established, when those in leadership demonstrate an ability to work around the differences. I do not stir up trouble or hurl insults or make Cathy McKeever household and should be handled as such. Though this may seem simplistic, simplistic, there are only two basic differences differences - the size of the income and the size of the expenditures. I acknowledge there arc services generally provided by a municipality which arc lacking in Clarington, yet I also recognize that everything residents residents expect from their local government government cannot be guaranteed without judicious judicious planning and a healthy bank balance, As our population has increased, so have our needs; yet I believe that to have directed which facilities should be in a specific location before knowing knowing the actual make-up of that area would be reckless. We have now readied a stage where the requirements requirements of both individual communities and the town as a whole can be evaluated. evaluated.
