12 The Claringlon Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, November 12,1994 Harness Drivers Donate Earnings to Easter Seals Major league sports fans are upset upset these days, and with good reason. reason. It seems that most of their cherished cherished superstars and the management of the teams they play for have completely forgotten or ignored ignored the most important part of their existence - their public. In this money madness climate, it is refreshing to see sporting super- stars of the highest calibre donating their time and talent to charity and at the same time acknowledging the patrons who in the long run pay their salaries. We're referring to the elite harness harness racing drivers in North America, America, eight of whom found their way to the small track of Kawartha Downs near Fraserville, Ontario, recently recently to ' participate in a charity driving competition. To appreciate their commitment to the fundraising affair, it must be pointed out that harness racing drivers drivers have no contract. Unlike virtually virtually all other sports where athletes get paid regardless if they play or not, drivers only receive a paycheque if the horse they've driven finished in one of the top five positions in a race. And then they receive just five percent of the purse money the horse is awarded. Nobody pays them if they get injured, injured, which happens frequently in this dangerous game where split second second decisions and razor sharp reflexes reflexes are essential to survival. Harness racing drivers do not have personal appearance contracts which require them to acknowledge their public every once in a while. They do it because they know if the sport is to survive in these tough times, that they must do all they can to show the fans they appreciate their support. The eight drivers who gave up a night's work and pay to come to Kawartha were Doug Brown, Paul MacDonell, Steve Condren, Tony Kerwood, William Gilmour, William William O'Donnell, Daniel Dube and Ron Waples. Each and every one is a superstar is his own right. Between them, they have earned over $18 million in purses so far in 1994. In their careers, the eight have accumulated more than $308,933,000 in total purse money. Their list of accomplishments in the standardbred sport are long and impressive. impressive. There were two motivating factors factors bringing these talented drivers to Kawartha. One was charity. For five years now, Doug Brown has organized an evening of racing to benefit his favorite favorite cause, the Easter Seals. The past three years the event has turned into a drivers' challenge with Brown assembling a team of four to go head-to-head with another foursome put together by popular Kawartha veteran Guy LaRush. The first year, LaRush's team emerged victorious, but Brown's team evened the score the following year. Last year, LaRush went one up again. Unfortunately, LaRush was not able to participate this year as he's hospitalized with throat cancer. All of the eight drivers making the trek to Kawartha, in O'Donnell and Waples' cases all the way from New Jersey, were doing so out of friendship and respect to one of their own - Guy LaRush. These days it's difficult to find such unselfish behavior in the sporting sporting world. And the wonderful conclusion conclusion was that everyone won in the truest sense of the word. e Against Novico On Saturday, November 5, Aam- co met Novico in their second league game.
