GAME CHANGED -- It was announced some time ago that the Bowmanville Eagles would be staging a fundraising game against a team comprised of former members of the Philadelphia Flyers. Because of money restrictions, that game has been cancelled. In its place, the 1980-81 Bowmanville team that won the Ontario championship, will play the Oshawa Generals Alumni team. Some of the players expected to play for Oshawa are Wayne Cashman, Nick Beverley, Bob Kelly, Chris Roberts, and Tommy Simpson. The game will be played at the Recreation Complex on Saturday, January 21 at 2:00 p.m. mm by Ted Denny Cowan Pontiac-Buick Anti-Lock Brakes Anti-lock braking systems (ABS) are the most important accident avoidance breakthrough in many years. However, many drivers don't understand the system completely, so I'll attempt to outline the advantages. The principal benefit of "ABS" is that it allows the driver to maintain steering control in emergency situations. "ABS" prevent the vehicle's wheels from locking up during hard braking. Where a non "ABS" equipped car might skid or spin out of control, an "ABS" equipped car can still be effectively steered by the driver. This means that potential accident situations can be avoided. "ABS" do not necessarily provide shorter braking distances than a non "ABS" equipped vehicle. "ABS" do not increase the available traction, but, they employ the electronics to make the best of the traction available. However, they cannot create traction where none exists, and drivers should not expect an anti-lock brake equipped to brake as effectively on ice as they do on pavement. With a record of 12 wins and one tie to their credit, the boys have shown everything it takes to be the team to beat this year. With other teams improving quickly, the Toros are having to dig down deeper to keep their unbeatén streak alive. Hard work, tenacious forechecking and backchecking, and excellent defence and goaltending are still keeping them. at the top of their league. The Toros have played an eight game schedule over the last 26 days, with an outcome of seven wins and one tie to show for their efforts. Leading the scoring pack for this eight-game stretch has been Bryan Barchard with 18 points, Ryan Fowler with 15, Corey Oliver 12, Stephen Comelissen 8, Chris Trace 7, Mike Richardson 6, Allan McGrath and Rene Cartier 5, Trevor Waddell, Brad Griffin and Chris Gerritts 3, Justin Andrews, Derek VanHeuvellen, Andrew Andrew Fracz, Jamie Whithead, and Daniel Michael with one each. Whitby No Trouble For Optimist Tykes The Optimist Club tykes paid a return return visit to Whitby on Saturday and came home with a 5-2 victory. The game was highlighted with two-goal performances by Jordan Gross and Chris Boyce, and a single marker by Tyler Ferguson. Assists went to Brian Corcoran, Ian Garrison, Alex Henderson, Corey Bradbum, Brian Piggott, and Jeff Nieuwenhuis. Another good goaltending performance performance by T.J. Beers and David Perron kept the Whitby scorers to only two goals. The team's defence, Daniel Mallette, Mallette, Jeff Hatfield, Kevin Smith, Brad Farrow, Mark Kelly, and - Derek McRon, played a strong game for the locals. Goaltending has been outstanding to date, with the duo of Justin Andrews Andrews and Adam Cryderman combining combining for a goals against average of just 1.33, including tournament play. Sparkling between the pipes, especially especially in a nail-biter in Richmond Hill, has been Justin Andrews. He kept the Toros in the game in the third period when an extra 10 minutes of ice time and a non-stop Richmond Hill attack had worn the Toros down. Also shining of late, and showing what good passing and teamwork can do for a line, has been Corey Oliver, Ryan Fowler, and Chris Trace. Combining Combining for 37 points in the last eight games, this trio has put on a show, especially especially in the tie against Whitby. They accounted for all of the scoring. A home game on November 5 against Newmarket proved to be the perfect setting for three Toros to show the non-stop hustle that has been the trademark of this team. Center Mike Richardson, left winger Allan McGrath, and defenceman Rene Cartier, Cartier, kept the pressure on a determined Newmarket club with non-stop skating skating both ways. Keep up the good work, boys. The Toros' next game is November November 19 against Barrie at Darlington Sports Centre.
