The same evening, the book will be presented to each of the schools located in Darlington Township. Admission to the book-launching is free and refreshments will be served. The 193 page history book covers such topics as early development, sports, schools, churches, military, hotels, and taverns. Every community in the township has been studied and many one-of-a-kind historical photographs have been reproduced. •eeeeeeeeeee PARENTING CHALLENGES - A panel of people knowledgeable about parenting problems of the 1990's will be available to answer your questions at the Bowmanville High School auditorium. The discussion takes place Wednesday, November 30th, at 7 p.m. Representatives from a number of local organizations, including the Durham Regional Police and social services agencies will be participating. •••eeeeeeeee DIABETES EDUCATION « The public is invited to attend a Diabetes Education Meeting slated for Wednesday, November 30, at the Bowmanville Lions Centre on Beech Ave. The session begins at 7:30 p.m. Guest speaker Bill Sparling, M.Div., an author and humorist, will discuss the role of humor, laughter and love in mastering stress and diabetes. He is the director of the Oakville Family Therapy Centre. This presentation is sponsored by the Bowmanville Lions Club and Clinic Pharmacy, Bowmanville. STEPHEN'S FOOD DRIVE - St. Stephen's High School will hold a food drive for families in the Bowmanville area on December 1st. Individuals are asked to donate at least one item of non-perishable foods to the students as they solicit your support during the Advent season. The food will be distributed to families the week of December 5th. •eeeeeeeeeee DANCE RECITAL - The Bowmanville High School Dance Recital is taking place on Thursday, December 1, at B.H.S. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 2ND MOONLIGHT MAGIC - Elsewhere in this edition, there are further details of the community Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony which takes place in downtown Bowmanville. The event includes a community carol sing and procession to the comer of King and Temperance St. from St. Paul's Church. The ceremonies begin at 7 p.m. and include plenty of additional carol singing. After the tree-lighting, you're invited to stay downtown for the entire evening. The BIA merchants will be open extra hours and they are offering refreshments and other special activities in their stores. There is also a shuttle-bus running throughout the evening to provide access to the downtown. This traditional launching of the festive season in Bowmanville is an event not to be missed. DANCE RAISES FUNDS FOR HOSPITAL - A benefit dance in memory of Joseph Wayne Glode will be held Friday, December 2, at Bowmanville High School. Hours are from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. The dance will feature Centre Lane Band and several other local groups. All funds will be donated to Memorial Hospital's equipment campaign in memory of Joseph Glode. Tickets are $5 per person at the door. The dance is sponsored by the Durham Northumberland Breakers Club. SANTA'S LITTLE HELPERS - A Christmas workshop for 2 to 5-year-olds is being offered by the YWCA. It takes place December 2 and 9, from 9:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. The little elves who participate will enjoy stories, games, songs, and making Christmas presents. SATURDAY, DECEMBER 3RD BREAKFAST WITH SANTA - On Saturday, December 3rd, you can enjoy pancakes, fresh cider, hot coffee, wagon rides, teddy bears and a children's play. Santa will also be present for this event which is to take place at Archibald Orchards, 6275 Liberty St. N. All donations will be going to the Salvation Army. There will be hot cider and candy canes for the children as well as an antique carriage demonstration. SUNDAY, DECEMBER 4TH SWING INTO CHRISTMAS » A 90-minute concert by the Big Wind Stage Band will be held Sunday, December 4th, in Newcastle Village. Light refreshments will be served and there will be a draw for a poinsettia. This event is sponsored by the Newcastle and District Chamber of Commerce. The Durham Philharmonic Choir, the Kingsway College Symphonic Choir, the First Baptist Church Choir and the St. John's Anglican Church Choir will be featured. MONDAY, DECEMBER 5TH BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL - The Newcastie Village and District Historical Society will introduce The Bold and Beautiful, a presentation by Herb Taylor of recendy-unearthed happenings from the early nineteenth century. This event will take place in the Lions Room of the Newcastle Community Hall on December 5th, commencing at 7:30 p.m. All are welcome. TUESDAY, DECEMBER 6TH OLDER ADULT CENTRE - Short videos about Health for the older adult will be presented Tuesday, December 6 at the Bowmanville Lions Centre. This program begins at 1 p.m. However, other events also are taking place between 10 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Cards or other games are offered. And at 10 a.m. there will be a demonstration of table decorations with the assistance of Cockerham Florists. These programs are offered by the Clarington Older Adults Association and are open to independent adults over 50 years of age. For information, call Community care at 623-2261. CANDLELIGHT VIGILS - A vigil to commemorate the Montreal Massacre and all other female victims of violence will be held on December 6th, commencing at 7 p.m. at the Visual Arts Centre in Bowmanville. This is the third year that the vigil has been sponsored by FOCUS, a Clarington women's group. Donations of cash, clothing or canned foods will be collected in support of the Bethesda House women's shelter. The public is welcome. There is also a candlelight vigil at the Oshawa YWCA, 1 McGrigor St., in Oshawa, on the same evening. This event will begin at 5 p.m. Guest speakers are Dianne Mathes and Ruth Farquhar, feminist therapists. „ © FOR YOUR INFORMATION WALKING PROGRAM FOR OLDER ADULTS - The walking program for Glarington's older adults takes place at 9 a.m. and also at 1 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Participants meet at the Lions Centre, 26 Beech Ave., in Bowmanville. For information, call Doreen German at 697-1863. SOLINA BOOK AVAILABLE - "A Place Called Solina," the popular history book by Marguerite Fraser about the Solina community, is available. PET PHOTOS WITH SANTA - The Oshawa and District Humane Society will be holding their second annual St. Nick Event. In this fund-raiser, everyone is welcome to have their pet's photo token with Santo Claus. The cost of each polaroid photo is $5, including a frame. Photos will be token at the Humane Society shelter at 199 Waterloo St., Unit #2, just off Ritson Rd.S., in Oshawa. Hours are from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This special event takes place December 3,4,10, and 11. There will also be a bake sale and raffle for lots of great prizes. All pets are welcome. Of course, dogs should be on leashes and cats should be in a carrier. HOSPITAL CALENDAR LOTTERY - As part of its "Together We're Better" campaign, Memorial Hospital Bowmanville has launched its sale of lottery calendars. The calendars cost $20, but they offer 365 chances to win prizes. That means one chance every day. Daily draws begin in January, with prizes ranging from $30 to $800. A total of $15,000 in prize money will be available in 1995. For detoils on purchasing your calendar, call 623-3331. Only 3,000 calendars have been printed, which means there are good odds for winning one of the daily cash prizes. Calendars arc available at numerous locations, including the hospital gift shop, and a number of local banks and real estate offices. TOYS, GAMES AND PASTIMES - An exhibition of over 50 examples of artifacts relating to playtime and hobbies from 1860 to 1960 is on display at the Clarke Museum and Archives. Dolls, puzzles, building blocks, tin toys, sleighs, wagons, a dog cart, toy kitchens, electric toys, musical instruments and plastic toys arc all represented. This feature exhibit will run through the winter months to the end of March, 1995. The Clarke Museum and Archives is located in Kirby, at Regional Rd. 9 and Highway 35/115. SANTA AT THE BOWMANVILLE MALL - Santo will be available for consultations at the Bowmanvillc Mall between now and Christmas. Hours arc from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Wednesday to Friday and Saturday and Sunday from noon to four p.m. Photos arc available. SANTA ARRIVES AT CANADIAN TIRE - The Jolly Old Elf himself will be appearing at the Bowmanville Canadian Tire Store on Friday nights from six p.m. to eight p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. He'll be on duly there for the next three weeks, For a donation of $5, kids can have their pictures taken with Santa or a video is available for $6. All proceeds from the [thotos and videos go to the United Way of Whitby, Oshawa and Clarington. SHARE THE LIGHT - A unique hospital fund-raising event will take place in conjunction with! the Bowmanville BlA's tree-lighting ceremony on December 2. Among the evening's events was an elimination elimination draw where several small cash prizes were awarded and a large cash prize of $700 was won by Ron Pope, of Bowmanville. The winner winner is shown above (at right) with Newcastle Lions Club President, Amos Langley. The Lions Club appreciates all the community support support for this and other fund-raisers during the year. IN THE COMING WEEKS... MEETING TO DISCUSS WATERSHED PLAN - The Ganaraska Region Conservation Authority is preparing a plan for the Ganaraska River Watershed which will help describe how the environmental ; features function and help assist municipalities in wise land Use and planning decisions. Public input is welcome. There will be an informal Open House from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, December 7, at the Port Hope Recreation Centre on Thomas St. A brief presentation by the Conservation Authority and its consultants, along with a roundtable discussion will take place at the same location, commencing at 7 p.m. CHRISTMAS CONCERT AT BHS -- An evening of Christmas music with the students of Bowmanville High School will be presented on Wednesday, December 7th. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in the BHS auditorium. There is a special admission price for seniors. The concert will include a choir and three school bands. STONE FARMHOUSE TOUR - On Saturday, December 10, the Local Architectural Conservation Advisory Committee will present a yuletide tour of historic stone farm houses. The tour runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature homes built by the Scottish stone masons who immigrated to Canada and passed through the countryside near Orono in the mid 1800s. They left behind a stunning architectural legacy as you can see from the tour. Tickets are available locally at the following locations: The Apple Blossom Shop, Orono; The Book Studio, Bowmanvillc; and Sutton Group Dynamic Realty, Bowmanville. The homes will be enhanced by traditional decorations, food and music. CHRISTMAS TOY DRIVE - As a special Christmas giving effort, the DUCA Community Credit Union, 136 King St. E„ Bowmanvillc, is urging citizens to join them to think about sharing during this special season. Non-perishable food items and toys may be dropped off at the local branch and all items will be kept in the community to be distributed by the Salvation Army. Your contributions would be greatly appreciated. OPTIMISTS SELL CHRISTMAS TREES - The Bowmanvillc Optimist Club will be back at the Bowmanville Mall selling Christmas trees, commencing Saturday, December 3rd.
