Literally thousands of people have made the call that saves a life or protects property. Who are these modern day heroes? They are known as Cellular Samaritans, and every month, they make an average average of 30,000 calls to 9-1-1 using cellular phones. Thousands Thousands more calls are made to local police emergency numbers. Cellular safety and personal personal safety are two issues of prime concern to Canada's national cellular carriers. For the fourth year in a row, Cantel and Mobility Canada have joined forces to take safety messages to the public with a national information campaign campaign with the theme: Use Your Cellular Sense. The campaign includes public service announcements, advertisements and information information kits, all targeting cellular cellular phone users with the message of using "Cellular Sense". "Weekends bring some of the greatest joys of summertime, summertime, and some of the worst traffic situations of the year," says Leonard Katz, Cantel's Vice President of Government and Intercarrier Relations. "This summer we are emphasizing a message we feel is important year- round. We are urging our customers to use their cellular cellular sense and make their communities safer places to be." The campaign's recommendations recommendations include: buckle up; obey the speed limits; use the hands-free and speed-dial features on your cellular phone, and be a cellular Samaritan: dial 9-1-1 to report accidents, suspicious activity or other emergencies. "We are urging customers to use their Cellular Sense to help make our communities safer places," adds Dave Wells, President and C.E.O. of Mobility Canada. In the past year, caring Canadians have used their cellular phones to intercept crimes in progress, co-ordinate co-ordinate roadblocks and lead crime suspects to their arrest, arrest, call for medical aid for school children and other accident victims, alert police to suspected impaired drivers and help stranded motorists. "On a dark cold night ... the phone was the best tool I could have had." This sentiment, sentiment, expressed by one-person one-person recognized as a Cellular Samaritan, is shared by many people who have submitted submitted stories for consideration consideration for Mobility Canada's or Cantel's Annual Cellular Samaritan awards. Both companies recognize outstanding outstanding efforts by cellular customers who have acted to make their communities safer places. "Cellular phones are extremely extremely valuable tools when it comes to reporting accidents accidents or other emergencies," says Inspector Rod Williams of the Ontario Provincial Police, Traffic and Marine Branch. "We join Mobility Canada and Cantel in urging people to use their cellular phones to help others."
