Toastmaster (TM) Irene Konzel- mann recalled memories of Christmas Christmas past while acting as Chair for the night. One of our newest members, TM Mike Sullivan, led the Table Topics session. During Table Topics, Toastmasters Toastmasters are asked to give a one- minute impromptu speech to develop the skill of "thinking on your feet". In keeping with the Christmas theme, Mike asked members to speak on various issues. Is it appropriate to give money as a gift? Should spouses exchange gifts? What would you do if your son/daughter gave you a kitten, kitten, but you hate cats? Paul Reesor, a guest, won the Best Table Topics Award for his humorous anecdote on why his wife chose him over their cats. TMs Bob Shearman and Mike Sullivan were arguing arguing for the resolution; TMs George Glasbergen and Stephanie Isert- Kohek argued against it. TM's Glasbergen and Isert-Kohek went on to try to prove the Santa existed existed at one time, long ago, in the second second century in a part of Europe that is now Turkey. Stories of his kindness kindness and benevolence toward children children became well known, and St. Nick's birthday (December 5) is still celebrated in many parts of Europe today. Santa Claus, as we know him, is an adaptation of St. Nick created by Washington Irving, a US author, in the early 1800's. Santa represents the need in us to be good to others, and St. Nick's spirit lives on in all of us.
