Clarke Rules! Win High School Hockey Title -- by Brad Kelly The Clarke High School hockey team demonstrated why it was the number one seeded .entry heading into the league playoffs. During last Wednesday's championship championship game against Port Hope, Clarke rallied from a one goal deficit deficit in the third period to claim the league title with an exciting 3-2 victory. victory. It was the second hockey championship championship that the school has collected collected in the past three years. Jeff Dart provided the heroics for Clarke with just over five minutes remaining in the game and the score deadlocked at 2-2. On an innocent looking play, Dart won a faceoff deep in Port Hope's zone, skated in front of the net, and deposited the game-winner past a startled goaltender. The goal set up a dramatic conclusion conclusion to the game, as Port Hope hemmed Clarke in their own zone for the final couple of minutes in an attempt to gain the equalizer. But Clarke's Jeff Parry, who shared the goaltending duties with starter Clayton Rendell, thwarted Port Hope from tying the game. It certainly wasn't easy. Even a holding penalty against Clarke with only 57 seconds left in the game, which put Port Hope on the power play, didn't deter the club from getting their hands on the championship trophy at game's end. Though undisciplined penalties had plagued Clarke all year, they managed to keep their ' composure throughout the game, despite the questionable call in the final minute of play. In all, they were only assessed assessed three minor penalties. Their ability to stay out of the penalty box was the difference in the game. "That was the big thing for us," said Jeff Darrach, who shares the coaching duties with Jim Parmer. When the two aren't coaching, they are teammates with the Jr. C Little Britain Merchants. "We told the guys before the game that if they took retaliation penalties they would be sitting on the bench and watching because we had plenty of guys who wanted to play," said Darrach. Ryan Dunnigan and Allan Lacey also scored for Clarke. The two teams played a scoreless first period, period, and exchanged one goal each in the second. Port Hope took a 2-1 lead five minutes into the third period, but Lacey's power play goal two minutes minutes taler set the stage tor the winner by Dart. The one-game final was expected to be a close affair. Clarke entered the playoffs as the number one seed after finishing first overall in the regular season. In their semi-final game, they eliminated the defending league champions from St. Stephen's by a 6-3 score. Port Hope, who were seeded second second after finishing behind Clarke in the league standings, gained entry into the final game after beating St. Mary's in their semi-final encounter. encounter. The close score in the final game was attributed to the strong play of the goaltcnders for both Clarke and Port Hope. "In the first period and a half, our goalie (Rendell) really kept us in the game and played well," said Darrach. "We played the same all game, and kept our confidence level up for the whole game." Clarke benefitted from the biased support of a large contingent of fans at the Newcastle Arena. Students of the school were able to "buy" their way out of class to attend the game. Their vocal support was deafening as the final buzzer sounded. Specialty Teams Lead Goodyear Eagles by Brad Kelly Though the lustre has been tarnished tarnished on their invincibility, the Bowmanvillc Goodyear Eagles continue continue to shine brightly on home ice. Sunday night at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex, Bow- manville extended their home ice winning streak to 13 games without a loss, with a 3-1 decision over Little Little Britain. Sunday's win came on the heels of Bowmanvillc's second defeat of the year suffered Friday night to the expansion Georgina Ice. An overtime overtime goal gave the surprisingly strong Georgina club a 4-3 decision. Bowmanville 3 Little Britain 1 The loss did little to close the insurmountable insurmountable lead that Bowmanville Bowmanville has built on top of the Central League standings. In fact, their record in comparison to other teams in the province rates Bowmanville as the second best team, behind the defending provincial champions from Belle River (see story elsewhere elsewhere on sports pages). Against Little Britain on Sunday, Bowmanville took advantage of their strong play on special teams to post their twenty-second victory of the season. Two power play goals, and one short-handed tally was all they needed needed to subdue the struggling Little Britain club, who are in a battle with Bobcaygeon for the final playoff spot. Chad Taylor and Dave Real potted potted the power play goals, while rookie rookie Jay Cannings rediscovered his scoring touch with a first period short-handed marker. Dave Lee spoiled the shutout bid of Bowmanville goaltender Jeff Reid with only 9:09 remaining in the third period. Lee was left alone in front, and his quick shot eluded Reid. In keeping with the trend of the evening, Lee's goal came during a Little Britain power play. The game was a chippy affair, with three bouts featured on the main card. Newcomer Brent Gaylor, and defencemen Dave Watt and Craig Hilton got the nod on all of the judges cards, for those who were scoring. Coach Mark Watson expected that style of game, and was quick to The game was just another in a continuing long line of close decisions decisions that Bowmanvillc has been involved involved in on home ice. Of their 13 wins, nine have been by two goals or less. Two of the four blowouts have come against the lowly Bobcaygeon Bobcaygeon Bullets. The margin of victory may begin to increase slightly as Bowmanvillc Members of the Clarke High School hockey team did a victory lap witli the league championship trophy after beating Port Hope by a 3- 2 score in the final game played last Wednesday. "We have to start to turn it up a bit and get the regular guys out and into the lineup." lineup." THE SCOOP - Brent Gaylor looks like a welcomed addition. Though he exited the game early af ter a second period fight, he adds some size and strength to the forward forward lines. He also has a mean streak, which is a welcomed addi- tion...Both Chad Taylor and Jay Cannings picked up a pair of points against Little Britain. Each had a goal and an assist. Gary Adams and Curtis Hodgins also picked up one assist each. The Bowmanville Eagles were involved in a rough and tumble affair with the Little Britain Merchants on Sunday night at the Garnet B. Rickard Recreation Complex. Two power play goals and another while shorthanded helped Bowmanville to their thirteenth win on home ice without a loss. -They edged Little Britain 3-1. Busy Week for Crows Sports The Crows Sports major atom Toros Toros had a very busy week that ended with a tie in Ajax, and a win at home against the Vaughan Rangers. The major atom Toros had just come off a one week break in their schedule and, although the team was a little rusty early, they picked up the pace against Ajax and settled for a 2-2 tic. Ajax opened the scoring at- the midway point of the first period, and if not for the excellent play of goalie Erik Smalc, the score could have been a lot worse. The Toros picked up their pace in the second period and tied the game with Ajax a man short, Jeff Reynolds won a faceoff in the Ajax end and dropped the puck back to Nat Fair. Nat wound up and fired a slapshot at the net, which Ben McCaffcry deflected deflected past the Ajax goalie. Dylan Welsh put the Toros in the lead a few minutes minutes later on a nice setup from Jeff Reynolds Reynolds and Ben McCaffcry. Ajax tied the game in the third period period and the game ended deadlocked at 2-2. Special mention to the great defence played by Darryl Steele, Ryan Pctrich, Bobby Williams, Kenny King and Nat Fair. On Saturday night, the Crows Sport Toros played host to the Vaughan Vaughan Rangers and they played one of their best games of the season. "We've got some guys on the team who can handle themselves, and we aren't going to let teams keep doing that to us." In the fights involving Watt and Hilton, both players came to the aid of teammates. Though wary of ever showing preferential treatment to any of his players, Watson has made it clear that Curtis Hodgins, Todd Cannings, Cannings, and Gary Armstrong, are not to be abused on the ice. "Everybody knows that Curtis (Hodgins) is the best player in the league, and players from other teams arc taking liberties with him," said Watson. by Ted Denny Cowan Pontiac-Buick Secwut'û tyieetùuyû During this holiday season, I would like to express my thanks to all of my friends and customers who have made my transition into the automobile business an enjoyable and rewarding one.
