6 The Clarington Independent, Bowmanville. Saturday, December 24,1994 Statesman Clipping Recalls Cobourg Citizenship Ceremony from 1956 Our thanks to John Schoonderbeek of Bowmanville who, several weeks ago, brought in this clipping from The Canadian Statesman of April 1956. We are reproducing it because many of those pictured are still area residents. The clipping follows: "In a most impressive ceremony on a Monday afternoon in April, 1956, at the Counties Court room in Cobourg, forty-two former citizens of other countries renounced allegiance to the country of their birth and became Canadian citizens. His Honor Judge Wilfred S. Lane of Picton conducted the moving ceremony in the absence of His Honor Judge Miller who is in Europe. Following the distribution of Citizenship papers, the Cobourg Business and Professional Women's Club, headed by Past Presidents Mrs. Catherine Gaiger and Miss Madeline Rooney, held a welcoming welcoming reception for the large group. Short greetings were brought by Mrs. Gaiger, John M. James, M.P., Kenneth Symons, Clerk of the United Counties and Mrs. Jennings of the I.O.D.E., Toronto, who originally had given the Cobourg ladies the idea of the reception. All ladies were presented with a Maple Leaf pin by the B. & P. Club. Seen in this photo are most of those from Durham who received papers. In the centre are the United Nations flags. The Upper Canada Bible Society presented new Bibles to each of the participants.
