In recent years, an incredible range of approaches approaches to the traditional quilt form have been explored by contemporary Canadian quilt makers. The Art Gallery Gallery of Northumberland is pleased to contribute to the discussion and awareness of the continuing development development of contemporary Canadian quilt making through the presentation of the work of Dorothy Winter. Now residing in Cobourg, Dorothy Dorothy Winter began quilting in 1972 when she moved with her family into an old farmhouse. She started by piercing scraps of material, into traditional traditional patterns. In the mid-1980s Winter began to break away from traditional traditional patterns, creating her own designs. This exhibition focuses on her work since this transition. Over the past eight years she has moved from minimal representation with plain fabrics to increasingly abstract forms. In her later works she uses patterns in fabrics to suggest texture or evoke atmosphere. Most of her subjects are inspired by the environment environment and her more recent works deal with the local Cobourg area. The exhibition exhibition will include approximately twenty quilts. The Art Gallery of Northumberland Northumberland is located in Victoria. Hall, 55 VKing St. West in Cobourg. The gallery gallery is open Tuesday through Friday from 9 to 5 and Saturday and Sunday from 1 to 5. For more information call 905-372-0333.
