6 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvilie, Wednesday, December 28,1994 Clarington Youths Describe "What Family Means to Me" Grades 9 and 10 During this, the International Year of the Family, the Clarington Youth Committee sponsored an essay contest through the schools. Grades 7 and 8 Level Winner by Elizabeth Henry Jenny sits in the dark room alone, quiet as can be. A silent tear falls down her face, as she looks out the window at all of the children outside, playing with their parents. She wipes the tear away and chuckles to herself as a small child takes its first steps, surprised to sec its mother's pleased reaction. Jenny's an orphan. She's never known what it's like to have a family. No brothers, sisters not even a mother or father. Jenny lives in a big building with many other children like herself. Jenny only has a few friends: Joey whose bed is right beside hers, Jere- mia the girl who sits to eat with Jenny everyday, and her very best friend Carolynn. Carolynn works at the orphanage. orphanage. She comes to check in on Jenny everyday. Sometimes she'll bring her a little gift like a yo-yo. Jenny hopes that someday she'll have a family of her own that she promises to take care of forever. Brian walks home from school, all alone. He watches the birds sing to each other and the wind blow in the trees. He's in no rush to get home. He knows that when he gets home, the house will be empty. Brian's mother works late everyday everyday and doesn't get home until late in the evening. Brian will have to heat up some leftovers in the fridge for dinner. dinner. He doesn't mind too much anymore. anymore. He's used to it. After dinner, Brian will finish his homework, watch a little T.V. and go to bed. Sometimes Brian wishes that he could come home to a house full of brothers, sisters and a mother and father, father, but Brian knows that everyday he will still come home to the same empty, lonely house. When I get home my sister and my mom are home too. Sometimes my mom has made a yummy treat I can eat. It's piping hot and it's delicious. Sometimes my sister will play a card game or a board game with me or sometimes she'll help me with my homework. Soon my dad will come home. When he gets home he will help me with my French homework if I have any. Sometimes after dinner my other sister will call from university to tell us how she's doing. I love her calls; they always put me in a better mood! And of course, I can't forget about • my cat "Boots." Boots welcomes me home everyday and makes sure that I'm never bored. She keeps me very busy. I ALWAYS have SOMEONE to play with or talk to. I know now that I am very fortunate fortunate to have such a wonderful family. There are many different types of families. Some without brothers or sisters, some without a mother or a father, father, some children that don't even have parents. In conclusion, I would say that my family means A LOT to me. They mean love, caring and friendship. We give each other support and we spend a lot of time together. I am truly grateful grateful to have such a loving family. Grades 11 to OAC Level Winner by Majan Hoops Today, in Canada, people hold to diverse and often confusing definitions definitions of family. If we look around we see a lot of variety in the types of families families that people live in. For some people people a family is a set of grandparents, parents and children. For others a family family is made up of a single parent and his or her children. Some couples have children through adoption and some have no children at all. In our courts homosexual couples are battling battling to also be recognized as families. For some, a family must involve blood tics. For others, exchanging vows and receiving a wedding document document is unnecessary. My family has taught me to look beyond blood tics and sec that a family is more than a set of parents and their children. 1 live in a foster family. A foster family reaches out and brings in children children who, for some reason, cannot live at home. I learned to share my parents with children who needed them as much as I do. They don't know what it is like to grow up in a loving and caring environment, or what it was like to know that someone was listening and that he or she understood. understood. Now they can know how wonderful wonderful it is to know that they are important important in the eyes of the people who care about them, However, living in a foster family can be difficult. Sometimes the natural natural children arc resentful of the foster ones and don't feel like sharing their parents anymore. They often feel as though they are being put on the back burner of the stove. This is especially tme if the foster children have needs 'and require a lot of cure, as is the case with my family. But all it takes is a hug or a.sweet smile and all of those feelings disappear. Then with a hug or smile in return, diapers arc changed, hair is braided, or someone is tickled. My family is important in the lives of these children. We are a normal and loving family. We learned something something new each day, like to handle bad behavior positively. I have learned to feel a real, deep love for my brothers and sisters. I accept litem for what they arc as they accept me for what I am. That is the most important thing living in a foster family has taught me. It doesn't matter if I don't share blood ties with these children. They are family to me. We share our hurts, we laugh together and make memories like families do. We learn from each other and accept each other. That is what family is all about. It is listening and understanding. It is sharing responsibility responsibility and talking about feelings. feelings. It is fighting and resolving problems. problems. But most of all a family is about living together and caring for each other. by Julie Elliott When I think of the word "family" I think of good times, great memories and a loving environment. This is the thought ol my family. Then I think of other families. While I'm warm in my bed at night, with my other family members in theirs, a poor family in Somalia may be struggling to stay alive, let alone sleep. Meanwhile a small child is being being abused by her father because he had a hard day at the office. This little girl's life as it could have been is now a dreaded thought in her poor, little, helpless mind. Right now a young mother's son could have just fallen from a tree and broken his spinal cord. This means he's paralyzed from the waist down. The students were given plaques by Bill Todd of Bowmanvilie High School English Department and Kim Heustis of the Clarington Youth Committee. To Advertise Phone 623-3303 ACCOUNTANCY WILLIAM C.
