The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanvillc, Wednesday, January 11,1995 7 Statesman Honors 1994 Athletes of the Year Chris Van Meyl, of Newcastle, and Sarah Couch, of Bowmanvillc, have been selected as the 1994 Canadian Canadian Statesman Male and Female Athletes of the Year. Based on their accomplishments over the past year, both are very deserving of the recognition. Both athletes have had their names added to the plaque that is on display in the front office of The Statesman. The names of previous winners of the award, which was first presented in 1990, arc also engraved engraved on the plaque. The winners also received a plaque to keep, and $100 worth of Statesman Bucks, which arc redeemable redeemable Jike cash at participating merchants. Very few athletes can claim that they arc the best in the world at their chosen sport. Chris Van Meyl is one who can. The grade seven student at St. Stephen's Elementary was right on the mark in 1994 in the sport of archery. He captured a gold medal in August at the World Field Archery Archery Championships that were held in Culford, England. The scoring in Van Mcyl's division division was so close, that after the five-day competition, only a single point separated the first, second, and third place finishers for archers 15 and under. His score placed him 16th among all the international-calibre archers in the competition. To gain entry into the world championships, Van Meyl won gold, medals at the Ontario and Canadian championships. In the Canadian championships, he achieved a score of 531 out of a possible perfect score of 560. It was his personal best, and was a mark he would later match in his world championship victory. At only 12 years of age, Van Meyl is the youngest recipient of the Athlete of the Year award in its five-year history. In 1995, his calendar includes the Ontario indoor championships in February, followed by the outdoor outdoor championships in Septembers. If successful at the provincial level, there are also the Canadian championships championships and the U.S. Open to compete compete in. The year of 1994 was not only a busy one, but a successful one for Sarah Couch. The goaltcndcr competed at both the Canadian and World Championships, Championships, but on an entirely different pair of skates. Couch, the youngest member of the Toronto Acros Senior 'AA' women's hockey team, back- stopped her club to a gold medal at the provincial Championships that were held in Oshawa in February. As provincial champions, the Acros represented Ontario at the Canadian Women's Championships that were held in Winnipeg in March. After winning the national title in 1993, the Acros were hoping to repeat. Unfortunately, their stranglehold stranglehold on the number one position in the country came to an end. In the semi-finals, Alberta pulled off a major upset, edging the Acros by a score of 2-1, and forcing forcing them to the bronze medal match. In that game, they hammered hammered Saskatchewan by a 10-2 score. Just when the student at Durham College thought it was time to hang the skates up for another year, she received an interesting invitation that was rather intriguing. The Canadian women's roller hockey team asked her to transform the same goaltcnding heroics she performed on the ice, to a concrete floor. She was selected to represent Canada at the World Women's Roller Hockey Championships that were hosted by Portugal. Advancing to the gold medal game, Canada were stopped by Spain, who prevailed 5-3. In 1995, her Toronto Acros team is looking to win their seventh consecutive consecutive provincial title in London in February, followed by the Canadian Canadian Championships in Prince Edward Edward Island in March. If funding is available, the roller hockey team plan to enter tournaments tournaments in either Brazil or Italy.
