Unplugged by Paul Reesor Check your room thermostat for accuracy An easy way to control your heating costs is to set back the room thermostat by lowering the temperature. Lowering the thermostat by 10 degrees at night or when nobody is home can save you more than 10 per cent on your heating bill! It is, however, important to check the accuracy of the thermostat thermostat by placing a precise columnar columnar thermostat next to it to compare readings. If the readings readings vary by more than two degrees, degrees, you might want to replace replace the thennostat. These small errors in temperature temperature add to heating and cooling costs. Warming a cool room over the garage Unless the builder has properly properly insulated the garage, rooms over this area can he very difficult to heat. Keeping the garage door closed in the winter is a good start. Make sure the 'door' sweep' is intact. The garage door can be fitted with an insulation insulation blanket (check with your local hardware supplier). If you park you car in a wanner garage, it should be noted that road salt becomes most active at the freezing point and will advance the rusting rusting process on exposed metal! Reduce heal loss in the room by installing 60 mm (2- inches) of polystyrene foam- board insulation on the garage ceiling. Caulking the outside walls in the room at and behind the baseboard will reduce floor drafts. Installing a heavier underpad underpad and thicker carpet might be a gotxl investment. Planting evergreen wall ivy, shrubs or small trees along the outside of the garage will protect protect the outside wall surfaces from the cold winter winds, Thank you for your interest. Still in holiday mode, the first week back seemed to drag along. I guess we had become too used to not thinking or working during during the day. The first day back was made a great deal easier by the senior hockey team. The Pride treated the entire school and staff to a hockey game at the Orono Arena Monday afternoon. afternoon. This special game was against a team from Alexander Galt Secondary School, of Lennoxvillc, Quebec. Not only did we have members of the school band on hand to play the national anthem, but our Member of Provincial Parliament, Parliament, Mr. John O'Toole, was also there to drop the ceremonial ceremonial puck. To top the afternoon off, the team played hard and ended up on top, winning 7-2. The whole team played their best and both Chris Kelly and Ryan Jackman scored two goals a piece. We hope we get the chance to meet up with the Quebec team again, perhaps making this an annual event. In other sports news, the girls' volleyball teams participated participated in big tournaments this week. The senior girls played strongly, against teams from double 'A' schools like Co- bourg East and West and Port Hope. After just coming back from a two week break they played extremely well. The junior team travelled to Camp- bcllford where they too played hard but came-up a bit short. The midget team, meanwhile was in Port Hope. They played like a well-tuned machine and ended up tied for second place. The girls were not the only active active ones this week, though. The boys' basketball teams took their show to Cobourg as well. Here, they were slightly out-matched and ended up losing losing hard fought matches. Finally, Finally, the senior hockey team took part in the Sno-Fcst Tournament Tournament in Peterborough where they, too, fell a little bit short. All in all it was a week of skill building for the Royal athletes. With exams only one week away, the level of stress at school seems to be on the rise. All students arc finishing up their last big assignments and are starting to dig out those notes they made back in September. September. The grade 9's arc getting getting nervous about writing their first set of exams and the grade 12's and OAC's are studying hard for the exams that could make or break their university or college dreams. For those students in the middle, middle, these exams arc just a few of the many that they will write during their high school years. With semester one drawing to a close it is also time to say goodbye to some departing students students and staff. We wish them all luck with their future plans and hope that they will come back for a visit soon. Through the cloud of exams some of the students can sec a silver lining. A now semester means new classes, new teachers, teachers, and, of course, Camp Northern Lights. Those that have been in the past arc looking looking forward to the exciting weekend of relaxation, and the amateur campers arc ready to sec what it's all about. I just hope they pack light, because the walk in can be a killer. The Parent Advisory Council Council at our school has launched a fund raiser in hopes of being able to contribute financially to the school. They arc selling Nevada tickets at the Scars catalog catalog outlet store in Bowmanvillc, Bowmanvillc, so when you go in to pay your Christmas bills, please support their cause. You never know, you could be a big winner. winner. As the winter continues to roar outside, all of the students should be nice and warm inside inside while studying. Good luck to all on your exams and hope to see you next semester. BHS News by Sean Doherty It appears "old man winter" has returned to help ring in the new year. The bells at B.H.S. arc also ringing, which signals the unfortunate end to the staff and students' Christmas break. Classes have -picked up right where they left off prior to the holidays, and the activities activities that arc planned for the new year promise the second half of the year to be great! Mr. Schmidt, one of the music music teachers at B.H.S., has organized organized a trip for all interested music students to see the Broadway musical "Sunset Blvd." This trip should warm the hearts and souls of those who arc feeling the ill effects of the bitter-cold temperatures as of late. Sometimes high school can be very intimidating for grade., nine students. Many shy away from some of the fun that the school provides for students because of the interaction with senior students. Mr. Pottle teaches Phys. Ed. and Geography Geography in the school. He has also been busy organizing a grade nine only field trip to see the Toronto Raptors. Knowing Mr. Pottle's love of basketball, I think he is the most excited of the bunch! The trip will take place on Tuesday, January 16th, when the Raptors play host to Reggie Miller and the Indiana Pacers. Not only will the students sec the game, but they will also have a full tour of the Skydomc prior to tip-off. Grade nine students (with a little little help from their friend, Mr. Pottle) have quickly become Carpentry & Contracting 23 Years in this Area • Custom Built Homes • Kitchen Renovations • Additions • Decks • Store Renovations, etc. the envy of all senior students. You no longer have to be a first time home buyer to qualify for a 95% C.M.H.C. insured mortgage with a 5% downpayment. The Original First Home Loan Insurance programme restricted 95% financing to first time Home Buyers and to those who had not owned a principal residence at any time during the previous five years. C.M.H.C. will now insure these high ratio mortgages for specific "hardship situations" such as marital breakups resulting in the sale of a principal residence OR relocation to geographic area due to an employment change OR loss of equity in the principal residence due to a fall in market values (provided that the net equity from the previous sale is invested in the new principal residence). This amended plan will be of great benefit to those buyers wishing to stay in the housing market but arc unable to acquire a 10% downpayment. However, you must financially qualify lor these mortgages just as before and the usual C.M.H.C. Fees will still apply. For more information, contact your Realtor or any C.M.H.C. approved lender, (banks, trust companies, credit unions, etc.) Thinking of buying or selling soon? Please meet with me first.
