6 The Clarington/Courlice Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday, January 20,1996 Carter's Bakery Wins Invitational The Carter's Bakery Novice house league team travelled to Newcastle on December 28 and proceeded to treat themselves themselves to a belated Christmas present by winning the Newcastle Newcastle Minor Hockey League Novice Invitational Tournament. Tournament. Carters opened the tournament tournament with a hard fought 3-2 win over Clarington House League rival, Thursday Nile League. Kurds Salway and Brandon Kane opened the scoring scoring for Carters, with Justin Le- pine scoring the winner, assisted assisted by Daniel Sullivan and Brandon Kane. In the semi-final game, a determined Carter's Bakery squad faced off against a tough Manvers team, and led by Justin Justin Lepine with, two goals and one assist, defeated Manvers 6- 3. Jeff Mu timer, Mark Keith, Justin Newell and Kurds Sal- way added singles. Mathew Parker and Justin Caims, with two assists apiece, along with Braden Jebson, Jordan Mac- Pherson and Daniel Sullivan also contributing assists. In the championship game, an inspired Carter's Bakery team raced out to an early 6-1 lead, with Justin Newell picking picking up the hat-trick. But a nev- er-say-die team from Bobcay- geon fought back with three third period goals to cut the lead to 6-4, and force Carters to restart their engines. Brandon Kane and Jeff Mu- timer replied for Carters to finally finally put the game on ice to clinch the "A" Division Championship Championship with a final score of 8 -4. Kurtis Salway with two goals and Jordan Wilson with a single rounded out the scoring for Carters Bakery, with Brent Burry and Justin Cairns contributing contributing to the cause with two assists each. The game will feature the North York Aeros against an area all-star team. The Aeros' roster includes a number of players who are members of Canada's National women's team. The game will start at 2:00 p.m. ■ •••••••MM ALL-STAR -- Orono's Daryl Reid was selected to the East volleyball team that competed in the OCAA All-Star Game that was held in Belleville over the weekend. Daryl, who attends Durham College, helped lead the East to a 3-2 victory over the West in a match that was played before a capacity crowd. Daryl's older brother, Dustin, is a member of Canada's national men's volleyball team. JR. 'A' HOCKEY -- The Bowmanville Eagles will host the Ajax Axemen this Sunday night at the Recreation Complex, with the usual 7:30 p.m. starting time in effect. Following Sunday's game, only five more remain on the home schedule before playoffs begin. OHL ON GLOBAL -- Some may have caught local hockey product Jason Jackman on television Saturday afternoon, as his Guelph Storm played the Belleville Bulls on Global's OHL Game of the Week. Though Guelph didn't give a good account of themselves in that game, they will get a couple of chances to redeem themselves. They arc also scheduled to play on Global on February 10 at Kitchener, and February 24 when they host London. Faceoff for the matinee games is usually 2:00 p.m. •■■■■•■■•■•• VOLUNTEERS NEEDED -- The Bowmanville Eagles are seeking volunteer goal judges .for the remainder of their regular season home schedule, which includes two games in January, and four more in February. Goodyear Eagles Selected for All-Star Game The Bowmanville Goodyear Eagles were represented by defenceman Mike Davies (left), and forward Chad Taylor at the Provincial Jr. A All-Star Game that was held at the Recreation Complex on Wednesday night. In the end, the Eastern Conference prayed to be slightly better than the Western Conference, winning by a score of 6-3. Friday, December 22 had the visiting Pickering squad playing the Checkers Variety Toros for the second time in regular season play. The Toros potted two goals before the end of the period to take a 2-1 lead into the second period. Pickering scored the only goal of the second period, setting setting up the stage for an intér- esting third period of hockey. The Toros dug a little deeper deeper in the third period, and out- shot Pickering 11-7, and were, rewarded by their effort by scoring the only goal of the period period to win the game 3-2. Still sluggish from the holidays the boys allowed Ops to take their only lead of the game with less than two minutes remaining remaining in the first. However, the second and the third periods saw a Newcastle Newcastle team rebound as Nick Stacey scored his first of two on a breakaway from our end. Robbie Thompson, in his new forward position, then scored less than two minutes later. Nick's second goal followed a minute and a half later. Scott Luxton, Bobby Phelan, Mark Brennan and Matt Zawislak assisted assisted on these three goals which gave Newcastle a 3-1 lead going into the third. Ops was quick to return with one more in the third but just couldn't keep up to Newcastle Newcastle as the hometown boys showed just how much they wanted to play the game. The. third was dominated by Derek Hccrschop and Matt McGlynn, who each scored a pair. The defense squad of Adam Tollctt, Craig McManus, Brant Saunders, Saunders, Tyler Knight and Mall.
