The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanvillc, Saturday, January 20,1996 7 Burger King Bantams Extend Winning Ways After scoring two afternoon wins in a "No Body checking Tournament" the Newcastle Burger King Bantams returned to their home ice to play host to the Bowmanville Sand and Gravel team. Bowmanville took an early lead just three minutes into the game. But Newcastle tied it less than three minutes later on a goal by Chris Davis from Steve Foster. Craig Harness scored the only goal of the second period, unassisted. The game remained 2-1 until until with 3:11 left in the game, Steve Foster scored to give the Burger King Bantams some breathing room. John Armi- shaw finished the scoring with assists going to Steve Foster and Chris Davis. Final score was 4-1 for Newcastle. December 30 found the Burger Kings in Orono to play the team from Darlington Auto. Ron Smith got Newcastle on the board in the first. But the third period belong to the Burger King team as Steve Foster scored his second, third and fourth goals of the game. Also in the third, John Armishaw scored once. This was also the first game of the season that the physical Newcastle team has played penalty free. Optimist Girls Gain Split with Cobourg Clarington Optimist girls played against Cobourg on December December 16 only to be defeated 5-3. Sarah Little came on strong with a hat-trick, with three assists assists going to Lauren Crashley, and assists to Kristen Ryan, Ashley Weir and Melissa Winger. After a solid win against Ops, the boys travelled north to start the week. Newcastle, however, proved in Ops that a team that sticks to the basics of contact hockey almost always comes out on top. Even after losing two players in the game we were able to rally a 6-3 win. With less than a minute left in the first, Matt Zawislak netted the first goal of the game assisted by Bobby Phe- len. Ops players spent most of the second period in the box allowing allowing us to take a further 2-0 lead when Nick Stacey scored his first of two, assisted by Craig McManus. The Newcastle Newcastle boys controlled the third as Derek Heerschop, Nick and Matt scored four more assisted by Matt McGlynn. Ryan Led- dy manned the nets for the last time against Ops. Reynolds Plumbing Enters Tournament Reynolds Plumbing Peewees Peewees played Appleman Auto Body from Port Hope on December December 27 in the Whitby House League tournament. Derek Broley, (3g,2a) was named game MVP, while Mike Sellers (2g), Mike Murphy (la), Ian LaFlamme, Luke Lambert and Matt McLuskey also picked up points on the way to a 5-3 win. The Reynolds kids dug down deep, and bolstered by the excellent netminding by Ashley Getz, gave a good account of themselves, themselves, though losing 3 to 1. Derek Broley again scored the single Reynolds tally. Ashley Ashley Getz kept her team close with several sparkling saves, and was named game MVP for her efforts. The Reynolds crew, miniis 5 skaters took on the Hooper's squad in league play on January January 7. With eight skaters, they held the fort for two periods. Ian LaFlamme set up Darryl Yorke for the first Reynolds goal, and the game was tied at 1-1 going into the third period. The Reynolds kids ran out of gas, and managed just one more score, as Hooper's Trophy Trophy Centre scored five to win it. Ashley Getz kicked out several several hard shots and is beginning beginning to show consistency between between the pipes. Darryl Yorke and Matt McLuskey thrived on the extra ice time. Nick Beck had several big hits: Brent De- chene, Rob Cummer and Shane Yorke shared the defensive defensive duties and gave it all they had. Jesse Myschowoda and Ian LaFlamme bowled over several Hooper's opponents and came close to scoring several several times.
