On January 6, the Newcastle Newcastle Coffee Time Novice team travelled to Bcwdlcy to take part in the Rice Lake Hockey Association Novice House League tournament. The first game saw Newcastle Newcastle face a team from Port Hope. Dustin Kozak started his first game as nctmindcr. Port Hope scored early in the first, but Newcastle answered with a goal by Craig Kelly, assisted by defenseman Kyle Anderson. The rest of the game was tough for the Newcastle squad, and although they had some scoring scoring chances they could not put one in the net. Port Hope won the game. The first game loss pitted the Newcastle Coffee Time team against their rivals in Newcastle, the Optimists. The game turned into the thriller that the fans anticipated. This meet allowed club members members to obtain official times in some of the distance events - 400m Individual Medley, 400m freestyle, 800m freestyle and 1500m freestyle. The swimmers swam exceptionally well at the meet with over 75% best times from the group. Following Following is a list , of best times from this meet. Swimmers Carrie Kilpatrick, Kilpatrick, Matt Durkee, Mark Hod- gins, Amber Key, Melissa Ma son and Alyssa Norrish were all attempting their first distance distance events. All were very enthusiastic enthusiastic about their experiences experiences and are looking forward to their next chance to swim these longer events. Veteran swimmer Alison Eeuwes broke a four year-old 1 Clarington Swim Club Record during her 400IM race to establish establish a new mark of 5:29.24., Alison was surprised at her own speed after the race and proved to herself that some- times a relaxed approach to your race results in the best performances. Alison's time qualifies her for an additional event in the Junior National Championship. Swimmer Adele Jenkins bettered the Provincial standard standard in her 800m freestyle race. Her time allows her to go to Provincial Swimming Championship in March. Adele's swim also qualifies her for the Junior National Championships, Championships, to be held in Calgary Calgary this February. from Scan Price. Neither team quit, and the action got better from both sides. The fans were going wild. Both teams showed determination and grit. Coffee Time put the game away late in the third on a goal by Gordon Vale, assisted by Amanda Vyfschaft and defenseman defenseman Alex Andringa. Goalies of both teams played well, with Coffee Time backstop backstop Brendan Oldman getting a well-deserved shutout. The win put Coffee Time into the 'B' finals. finals. A shoot out format was used to decide a- winner, and Coffee Time's center Brett Gillan scored the only and winning goal. In this game, defense was a key element, led by Jacqui Vale, who was chosen as player of the game. Coaches Chris Wright, Brian Gillan and Carl Vyfschaft were pleased with the effort of every player on the team.
