14 The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanvillc, Saturday, February 3, 1996 Winter Wildlife Hike It seems that the general pastime of provincial legislatures legislatures is castigating the federal government. I wonder if Canadians Canadians feel belter when local politicians slam Ottawa? As I write this I'm making my way by train through the interior of British Columbia. The federal caucus is meeting in Vancouver, a meeting which would normally take place in Ottawa. But because of the vastness of the country and the feeling shared by other provinces that they have been forgotten in the aftermath of the Quebec referendum, referendum, the government is trying trying to address .the concerns of all regions. The Prime Minister feels going there, with his caucus, is one way of addressing those concerns. The Premier of B.C. is saying saying Ottawa has insulted the people of that province because because he has failed to appoint a West Coast fisheries minister. He also barks about not'having originally been given a constitutional constitutional veto even though constitutional constitutional amendments are meaningless to the average person. person. (Note the constitution has only been changed four times in the last 25 years). . Now that a number of provincial provincial elections are in the offing offing provincial politicians will begin attacking Ottawa to deflect deflect attention from their own meager accomplishments. •Parochial politics, in my view, has driven people to despair despair and disgust with their elected representatives. must not be allowed to divide The fact is we have a great Canadians. But if we are honest with ourselves, even in these times we can look back in history and see we live quite well compared compared with most countries in the world. Going forward into the future future will require a positive attitude attitude about who we are and where we want to take this country. This isn't just a cliché but a basic tenant that will have to guide us through difficult difficult times ahead. Of course the petty political squabbles must come to an end and Canadians will have to focus on what unites us. I understand some people in Durham want me to concentrate concentrate solely on economic problems. problems. I look forward to the day when I can. But in reality national national unity and economic uncertainty uncertainty are inextricably linked. There has never been a prolonged prolonged period of economic growth in countries living under under the shadow of national despair. despair. While in B.C. 1 have been invited to speak with a number of economic interest groups. I will remind Canadians in Western Canada that we shall share and benefit from a strong and united Canada.
