Richards A region-wide referendum on the amalgamation of Durham Durham Region into the Greater Toronto Area will be discussed discussed by Durham's Regional Regional Council next Wednesday. A notice of motion calling for the vote was brought to Regional Council last week by Oshawa Councillor Brian Nicholson. Councillor Nicholson's proposed referendum ques tion asks: /l Do you support the amalgamation of (Pickering, (Pickering, Ajax, Whitby, Oshawa, Clarington, Scugog, Uxbridge, Uxbridge, Brock) into a political or administrative association with the Greater Toronto Area?" Yes or No are the only two choices. Councillor Nicholson's motion asks that the referendum referendum be held no later than April 30,1996. I've said before, and I'll say it again, that no matter where I go with my job or in the local stores, everyone is telling me that they don't want to be a part of Toronto," Mayor Hamre said. "I haven't heard one word of support for the idea. There's a lot of angry people out there," she added. While some citizens might be concerned about the cost of a referendum, Clarington's mayor estimates the region- wide vote would not be as expensive expensive as a by-election. "The cost would be outweighed outweighed by the need," she observed. "This is a democracy. This is our community we're talk-' ing about," Mayor Hamre added.
