The knee performs three major functions, support the knee cartilage bears 50- 60% of the body's weight, stability stability - a complex muscle- tendon system stabilizes the joint and leg. Movement: The knee provides rotation, stability stability and shock absorption. Any underlying structural or biomechanical deficit of the lower extremity may lead to knee pain, and/or Achilles ten donitis, plantar fascitis, stress fractures. All of these injuries start as abnormal stress reac- tions to soft tissue and/or bone. Chronic knee pain is often found in athletes, the elderly, and women. Hyperpronation (rolling in of the foot and ankle). Hypersupination Hypersupination (rolling out) leg length or pelvis unlevelling are common findings. I also recommend recommend watching a runner run and walk, this is called treadmill treadmill or gait analysis. In order to accurately identify muscle imbalance, Dynamic SEMG electromyographic analysis should be done. Electrodes are placed over the involved muscles muscles and an analysis while running running is done with the computer. computer. These conditions can be effectively effectively managed if identification identification is early and an appropriate treatment program follows. We use a team approach which includes Chiropractic to correct any underlying joint dysfunction, our Physiothera pist works together with the Kinesiologist and sets up an active program of muscle strengthening and balancing. Modalities such as interferren- tial current are effective for increasing increasing muscle strength and reducing inflammation. For the athlete, training programs are modified. Clinical evaluation determines determines the need for Foot Orthotics. Orthotics. We use a weight bearing bearing technique for custom made, flexible orthotics to correct correct structural and functional foot deficits.
