Newcastle Lands Jr. C Franchise Newcastle will be the site of the newest entry into the Central Ontario Jr. C League. Negotiations have been going on for some time now to place a new team there, and only a couple of hurdles hurdles remain. And those hurdles are very small ones. The Bowmanville Eagles have by Brad Kelly entered into an agreement with Dave Luciuk to resurrect the old Jr. C team for the 1996-97 season. The league has given its approval for the new franchise, subject subject to negotiating a protected territory for players. The only other hurdle remaining is a vote of approval from the OHA at their annual meeting in June. The vote is expected to be a formality. Despite joining the Jr. A league last year, Bowmanville still maintained the rights to their Jr. C team. That team is essentially being bought by Luciuk. Luciuk played professional hockey in the Detroit Red Wings system, and has coached midget hockey off-and-on in Oshawa for the past 15 years. He is very familiar with the players available to play at the Jr. C The Newcastle ieve| - There is a major sponsor interested interested in becoming involved, and it's quite likely that the name of the hockey club will reflect the sponsor in some manner. The other option being considered is a "Name the Team Contest" that would accept suggestions from residents of the area. The Newcastle hockey club will be affiliated with the Bowmanville Eagles, and is planning to play home games on Saturday nights. With the season. addition of Newcastle, the Central League will expand to seven teams. Port Perry, Uxbridge, Georgina, Little Britain, Lakefield, and Bobcaygeon will make up the rest of the league. The announcement of the team in Newcastle may put to rest some of the rumors that are circulating regarding the Jr. A Bowmanville Eagles. Some of the more popular rumors making the rounds have indicated the team had been sold or was moving to Whitby. Neither is true. In the words of General Manager Mike Laing, the Bowmanville Eagles, "are not, were not, and will not move." Whitby would like to land either a Jr. C or Jr. A team. But, because of the number of junior teams already located in that area, granting that town a franchise seems unlikely. The Eagles are moving ahead with plans for next year, which includes the return of all the coaching and management management staff. The first on-ice activity for the team will be an evaluation camp that is tentatively scheduled for June 22-23 at Iroquois Park in Whitby. The camp will be limited to 60 players. From there, the team will open a training camp in conjunction conjunction with Newcastle some time in August that will be based in Newcastle. Once the Recreation Complex opens, the Eagles will move their training camp to Bowmanville, while players hoping to crack the Newcastle Jn C roster will remain behind. There are spots available at every position for next year's Eagles team, and manager Laing is looking to fill a number of those places with players from last year's Central Ontario Wolves midget team. In other news surrounding the team, there is a strong chance that the Eagles will be moving their home games to Sunday afternoons. The 2:00 p.m. start would break from the traditional 7:30 p.m. faceoff. Also, both John Paul Luciuk (forward) and Bob Roney (defenceman) are expected to be drafted by OHL teams at this June's midget draft. team will be playing their home games on Saturday nights for the 1996-97 FEATURES O g-Wedge" Technology 0 Unique Tread Block Phasing © Variable Groove Angle Geometry O New Tread Compounding 0 Two Full Polyester Body Plies 0 All-Season (M&S rated) O Classic Raised White Letter Stylings Enhanced Black Sidewall Graphics Q S Speed-Rated m April Specials BFGoodrich T/A List Sale Price Price Radial T/A Serrated Black Letters P205/55R15 87S 88561 175.80 108.00 P205/55R16 89S 70523 200.10 121.00 P245/50R16 96S 53281 229.50 135.00 Radial T/A Raised White /Serrated Black Letters P195/60R14 85S 84497 149.60 95.00 P215/60R14 91S 98659 154.00 97.00 Radial T/A ' Raised White /Serrated Black Letters P235/60R14 96S 79644 164.10 102.00 P245/60R14 98S 54322 174.10 107.00 P245/50R14 93S 48000 192.20 116.00 P265/50R14 98S 91337 208.90 124.00 P215/65R15 95S 78624 162.90 102.00 P195/60R15 87S 64472 156.30 98.00 P205/60R15 90S 71072 161.00 101.00 P225/60R15 95S 64148 176.70 108.00 P235/60R15 98S 54712 177.40 109.00 P245/60R15 100S'60013 182.30 111.00 P255/60R15 102S 71728 190.30 115.00 P275/60R15 107S 45185 210.90 125.00 P275/50R15 101S 50381 229.10 135.00 P295/50R15 105S 53415 248.20 144.00 Used Tires $20 and up 317 HOPKINS ST, WHITBY Mon.-Thurs. 8-5:30 Fridays* Saturday 8-2 NO CHARGE: • 4 yr. road hazard • tire disposal installation • alignment check • balancing • valve stem
