16 The Canadian Statesman, Bowmanville, Wednesday, April 10,1996 Section Two Health Practioners Concur: You are What You Eat by Laura J. Richards Alternative health practitioners practitioners want people" to know that they can't be "gutless" in their approach to getting healthy. Clarington residents Sue Valentine, a Reiki Master and Tracy James-Hockin an Iridologist plus Oshawa resident resident Nancy Lowry an Alternative Health Practitioner who specializes in a number of areas including including non-invasive allergy testing, testing, agree that what happens in one's digestive tract affects one's life. Lowry noted during an evening information session on Wednesday, March 6 sponsored sponsored by FOCUS, a local women's issues group, that "no two people are alike. The key is down in the gut. You are what you eat." She stated, everyone needs different foods in their diets. Using a non-invasive technique, technique, Lowry says she can check one's body muscles for allergies. She noted a shift-in what people eat will help tone down some of the impacts our environment has on us. "You can't live on Twinkies," she warned. James-Hockin pointed out, "For every meal that you eat, you should eliminate." Once the right diet is introduced, introduced, a person can lose five to 30 pounds through the elimination process alone, she said. James Hockin said, through iridology, one's body condition is mapped out so the iridologist can discover causes of concerns. She noted a session wi.th her can help p.eople find out what they need to fix. "You build up ill health over a period of time and you will need an opportunity for your body to go through the process of becoming healthy again," she said. Iridology "reveals the health of the body tissues through the fibres of the iris," she added. School Photos Do you remember the little red schoolhouses that used to be such a part of the local countryside? Or, better still, do you have photos? If so, artist Eric Bowman would love to borrow them. The Enniskillen painter hopes to finish a collection depicting every one of the unique village schoolhouses in time for a 4-H Pancake Breakfast to be held at Solina Hall on May 25th. So far, Bowman has completed paintings of the following nine schools: Haydon, Enfield, Union, Enniskillen P. S. #16, Bradley's #14, Bakers, Tyrone, Long Sault P.S. #13, and Burketon. These are on temporary display at the Town Hall in Bowmanville. If you can provide photos of any other old schools, call Eric Bowman at 263-8245. Valentine, a Reiki Master, talked about how the positive energy from her body is used to create a healing influence in others' bodies. Reiki clears, straightens and heals the life force path ways, says Valentine. Reiki uses the life force energy, congregating areas on one's body to one's advantage. A session with Valentine can take up to an hour as she goes through a meditative stale to allow the energy to go where it is needed. One of the most basic rules about Reiki, she explained, is that the person needing to be healed "must make a conscious conscious decision so they can be a part of their own healing." While many people might be a bit sceptical about Reiki, she noted, "it is a great value for ordinary people." The evening concluded with a 45-minute question and answer period. Lowry said, "our biggest challenge is to listen to ourselves." ourselves." Valentine said this takes time, but, once learned, it is a gratifying process.
