Engagement Announcement Edwin and Dianne Shaw of Port Coquitlam, B.C., are pleased to announce the forthcoming marriage of their daughter Sherry Leigh to Raymond William, son of Denton and Barbara Massic of Campbcllcroft. Wedding to take place at Grace Presbyterian Church in Millbrook on the 5th of October, 1996. Letter to the Editor Dear Editor: On March 18, 1996, the Orono Amateur Athletic Association brought to a successful successful conclusion their fundraising drive for a new ice resurfaccr for the Orono arena. What began as an item on a wish list 18 months ago became a necessity as the 1995-96 season season unfolded as it became evident evident that the old resurfaccr was not likely to last much longer. At that time, a fundraising committee was formed under the chairmanship of Michelle Malda to undertake the task of raising the necessary funds to pay for the new machine. The O.A.A.A. and the community community take pride in the fact that the administration of the Orono arena is not accomplished accomplished with municipal funding, funding, but is done through the efforts of volunteers from the community. So the logical approach for funding was to go Congratulations to Lenna and Stan Fronts on April 13th lk From the Family lit». ■ -- --3* to the local community and businesses to try to raise the $55,000.00 that would be required. The response was overwhelming overwhelming and was kicked off with a major contribution by the Arena Improvements and Projects Committee on October 23, 1995. In only five months, the project was complete with a final tally of $56,544.33. Donations came from many varied and sometimes unexpected unexpected sources. Thank you to all contributors contributors for their generous support which once more proves the adage that Orono is a good place to live. Sincerely, Orono Amateur Athletic Association Ray Bester, President EDITOR'S NOTE - Glad to hear, the fundraiser was so successful. Orono's community community spirit is an inspiration. Oh My! I 1 Happy 16th Birthday Mark and Greg on April 15th The group to which Rev. Russell is referring includes Rev. Nancy Knox of St. Paul's United Church, along with some of the participating groups. "When we walked into the meeting we didn't have a program, program, and when we walked out we did. It was a most productive productive two-hour meeting," Rev. Russell said. He said he thinks it will be equally productive for those who attend the two and one- half hour morning sessions in the program. "Each of those who come will lcam at least one skill," he said. While there is no registration registration required, people who want more information may call 623- 7361. By Edna Thlckson Last Thursday the seniors held their March Birthday dinner dinner with 24 members attending. Those who were honored for having March birthdays were Marjory Kenton, Hildon Peacock, Nettie Gordon. I also had a birthday on the 29th, but was unable to go. Cards were played and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Unfortunately, I didn't get a list of the prize winners. Sympathy is extended to friends and family in the recent death of Hector McLeod. Funeral was held on Friday in Petcrboro. The McLeods owned the store here in the 1950s. On Sunday an excellent crowd attended the Palm Sunday church service. The children were given palm leaves and paraded around the church. Rev. Sedgwick joined them, wearing a stole the ladies had made and given him when he first came here. Amanda Wood sang a solo. Mr. Sedgwick spoke on "Trustworthy Disciples." After the service, a dinner of soup, sandwiches and desserts was served. Visitors at Bertha Trew's included Jack and Hazel Crago. Several families are cutting their winter wood for next year, these days, before it gets too soft to work in the bush. On Sunday, the fire reels were at the house below where Bertha Trcw lives. Garbage was burning and it got away on them, but they saved the house. Richards The Canadian Auto Workers have donated $2,000 to Bcthcsda House, a shelter for abused women and their children children in Clarington. Karen Dolan, the Chair of the Local 222 Women's Committee, told The Canadian Statesman, "we're making this donation to bring the under- funding of shelters to the attention attention of the government." Bcthcsda House is just one of 39 shelters across Canada which have been designated by the entire CAW's Social Justice Fund to receive $2,000 donations donations from the fund. A letter from Buzz Hargrove, the President of the CAW, to Bcthcsda House notes: "Violence against women is an issue that the Canadian Auto Workers has maidc a priority over the last several years. As well as undertaking undertaking membership education and negotiating provisions in collective agreements, we do our best to link with women's organizations and shelters in the community." "Part of this linkage and coalition building is fundraising fundraising and providing donations to women's shelters in our communities communities which arc so dramati cally under-funded by all levels of government." Hargrove adds in his letter: "On behalf of our 205,000 members, I want to convey to you our solidarity in the broader broader struggle to end male violence and to offer this donation as a small contribution to this ongoing ongoing effort." Bcthcsda House Executive Director Karen Mayson noted that the shelter would probably put the donation to good use in the operations budget of the one-year old shelter. Dolan added this is the first time the Women's Committee of the CAW Local 222 has given a donation to Bcthcsda House. Kathy Fowlic, the co-chair of the same committee, said it won't be the last. ©J.P. St. Saul's tüttttteîr Cfiurtli 178 Church Street Bowmanville Rev. Nancy J. Knox, B.A., M.Div. April is Dental Health Month ... a great time to remind everyone about the importance of flossing your teeth. Choose a convenient time and do it around the same time at least once each day before plaque can harden. The old adage, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" sure applies to our teeth. Don't waste time flossing teeth that don't want to keep. The cause of Sudden Infant Death syndrome (SIDS) is still not totally known. Putting babies to sleep on their back or side instead of their stomachs has reduced SIDS cases. A new theory is emerging. In cultures where babies are not separated from mothers for sleep, SIDS is almost unheard of. It now seems you can "catch an ulcer" like you catch a cold.
