Horticulture News How many of our readers realize just how popular the hobby of horticulture has been? The word "garden" is even mentioned in the first book of our bible! This April 18, here in Orono we will celebrate 75 years, as a horticulture group. Our very first meeting was held April 11, 1921, and the very first president president Reverend J. W. Rae, first Vice-President Reverend A. K. Edmison, secretary Mrs. O. W. Rolph, Treasurer James Stork. Our Motto: "Orono, Where Flowers Grow" and our flower emblem "The Rose". Our Orono Horticulture Society won first prize on their exhibit of flowers at the Central Ontario District Flower Show held in Peterborough in August, 1933. They also won the honor of having the most members present, of any branch in district by having 38 members in attendance. (Courtesy of Helen Schmid). As this book was printed in 1967, we still had 4 chartered members from 1921 - Mr. and Mrs. E. J. Hamm, Mrs. O. W. Rolph, Mrs. Fred Tamblyn. This book was our first Society book 1967. (Courtesy of Isabelle Challicc and cover design by her daughter Donna Challicc.) From page 5 Once the ducks arc in the drink, the race will be fast and furious. Ticket purchasers will be able to egg-on their little yellow buddies at the Bowmanvillc Creek. Of course, if your duck doesn't win you will NOT be allowed to take it home for Roast Duck, Duck l'orangc or Peking Duck! That is strictly against the rules! The cute critters critters arc being rented, and each one must be brought back 'alive' so to speak. No one but arm-banded volunteers volunteers will be allowed near the waterfowl as they race down the creek, but all ticket-buyers will be welcome to encourage their favorite web-footed friends from a cordoncd-off area near the banks of the creek. Fraternizing with the duckies will not be allowed or tolerated by the organizers. The first duck down the creek and across the finish line will be matched with a ticket and owners of that ticket will be given $5,000. Hmm, need I say it? Those lucky ducks! Tickets can be picked up in Clarington's businesses where Duck Derby posters arc displayed displayed or through members of the 7th Bowmanville Scouting group. Also, The Canadian Statesman has lots of tickets for sale. All you have to do is "quack"...cr.,,ask!
