St. Stephen's Class Designs To vs Toy Company Executive Visits Secondary School The Clarington/Courtice Independent, Bowmanville, Saturday. April 13, 1996 11 by Elisha Ribeiro Have you ever wondered what went into making toys and who made them -- toys such as, 'the Slinky', 'Jenga', and 'Frustration'? Well, if you have, you aren't the only one. The grade ten business students at St. Stephen's Secondary School in Bowmanville, were given an individual study project by their teacher, Mr. Kyle McDaniel. The students have to create and build an original toy using any materials necessary. The toy is to be geared toward students between the ages of four and six. Their final product product will be presented at the end of May to the target market, kindergarten and grade one students students at Mother Teresa Elementary School in Courtice. As part of the research for information on toy making, the students at St. Stephen's had the pleasure of meeting Mr. David Irwin from the Irwin Toy company. Tie maker of toys such as 'Jenga' and many others, paid the high school students a visit on April 3. Mr. Irwin spoke to the students about the kind of work that goes into making a good toy. He told students that the success of a toy never lasts forever and that in the toy business business you are as good as your next product. Many factors go into making a successful product, product, says Mr. Irwin. You have to know what the target market wants, the 'in' trends, and what appeals to kids. But, the product is not the MPP Holding Forum on School Bd. The students at St. Stephen's would like to thank Mr. Irwin for the insight he gave us into the toy industry. The students were very impressed by the factors that go into the making of a toy and selling it.
